My grand pa bought a brand new one back in the late 80s, actually had to mail order it, for years that was all I heard was one day he's gonna get him a Troy built tiller.

My step dad is about to retire in the spring so I kind of picked his brain to see what he mite be interested in, asked him what are ya gonna do with all the spare time ?? he told me he'd like to try a garden.

So... now I'm think'n about buy'n him a TBT for a retirement presant, was curious if the older tillers mite be better built or have they been improved over the years ??

reason is if the older ones are of better quality I'll keep look'n untill I find a nice clean one & get one of those VS a new one thats just a tinny rattle trap, if thats the case.

Your valued opinions please .

The last time I looked at them the gear case looked the same to me, I use to work at a rental store years ago & we rented them out,too many people thought you could plow new ground with them, The ground has to be plowed before you use them.

pretty much nothing is built as good these days as they where in the 80s when your grandpa bought his. if it was me i would look for an older one. were still using tillers from the late 70s and 80s, i have used newer ones and you couldnt give one to me. a few of the new ones is decent made and heavy but most of them are so light they just bounce around if the ground is hard.

Fox Fire,

I can lend you this info.

A friend of mines parents own a huge dairy farm in town, his mother tends to a huge garden(they sell produce as well during the summer season) she had an older TBT from the late 70's, it had been backed over by a tractor or two, used/abused and finally this past spring the casting around the cylinder where the carb mounted broke off. A new cylinder was several hundred dollars, so they bought a brand new TBT, same size as the old one.

Well, it is by far no where near the machine the old one was. The sheet metal is thinner and cheaper, the tines are not as heavily built. She wishes she spent the money on the new cylinder parts. I would not be surprised if she goes that route over the winter and sells the new one.

I have looked around for one for myself, and was impressed with the Cub Cadet models from TSC, I am really leaning towards a Husqvarna rear tine tiller if I decide to drop the coin on one this spring.

I have a pretty old "Horse" that had been shed kept for years.. it still has the knobby tires like they used to come with not the chevron tread the never models have.. I had the carb rebuilt and ran it for 2 seasons.. Its been in my shed for 2-3 years now.. it has a 7-8 hp motor I think.,. electric start..really really heavy built.. as much of a hoarder as I am I doubt I will ever used it again.. I'd take $450.00..no more .. no less.. LOL..

My dad has two of the TroyBuilt tillers. One is a Horse the other is a Mule. Both are older machines.

$450 is a fair price on the old Horse.

I seen a couple on the side of the road for sale a few weeks ago, even from across a 2 lane you could tell it was a heavier machine than the new ones, think I'll hold out for an older one.
