I was talking to a guy this weekend and he was telling me how he always rinses game meat 3x before freezing or eating. I asked "why" and he had no real answer. I mentioned that fresh meat should have no bacteria on it and, any bacteria it does have is on the surface and destroyed when cooking.

This got me to thinking. With the exception of gut shot animals, which tend to require a rinsing of some sort to get intestinal matter off the meat, do you rinse your meat before eating or freezing. Why or why not?

Not the clean stuff, no. If there's excessive anything on there I'll either cut it off or rinse it quickly then paper towel it off.

No way! Not unless I dropped it in the dirt or on the floor.

Same goes with fish. No water on my filets unless they somehow get dirty.

No rinsing. Cut blood shot stuff away and pretty much that's it in terms of possible contamination. I don't even like rinsing the body cavity.

Cleaned a gut shot deer once.....some of that got rinsed pretty good.

Don't think it makes a difference on way or the other. Usually I will if there is hair or something.

I think it can make a differance. If you freeze sloppy, wet meat, it's going to be more prone to frost and freezer burn. Sloppy wet meat can also cook different, depending on cooking technique.

Then don't freeze sloppy wet meat and dry it before cooking.
