It was there and then it was gone....Not going to be deer hunting again until September. I'd give a lot for it to be October again with chinkapin acorns on the ground and watching deer come into bow range.

I'm looking forward to small game hunting but I know I will see a deer out there and won't be thinking about small game then. I hunted roughly 57 days and over 70 individual hunts and I still did not burn out. I guess I'd deer hunt all year long if it was legal. Well at least there is turkey season. Nothing like gobbler hunting. But it will take a while to switch out of deer mode.

I hardly got back into the woods after Thanksgiving week, being more focused on family and an unusual phase of church/work going down with us transitioning into a new building. Don't think I'll have time to do much anything outdoors this month, though I may go dip a line when they stock the trout.

I know the feeling. I had a good year and several experiences that made this year a little special. I went to my hunting place yesterday morning for one last tree-sitting. When I left the cabin I couldn't help but think, "That's the last time I deer hunt for nine months."

On the drive home I wondered why I felt a little blue at the end of deer season but don't get those feelings about fishing. Then I realized that fishing doesn't have such an abrupt end. I fished during deer season this year.

That's when I realized that deer season ends, but my deer hunting activities last year-round. I have shooting lanes to clear in places where I observed they are needed, trees to cut, stands to relocate, salt licks to maintain and trail cameras to enjoy. My spirits immediately lifted.

On top of all that, as soon a this weather breaks I'll be hitting the trout waters and starting my 2014 fishing adventures. All of those things make me feel happy, happy, happy.

I wasn't able to hunt 1 day in the Tennessee Deer woods this season. Life just doesn't happen the way you plan it sometimes. There's always hope for next year .

Personally, I'm kinda glad its over. Now, I can get back to reality. I hunted a lot this season, and it was beginning to wear me out, literally. My own fault, though. You know deer season controls your mind when you are sitting in a deer stand, your freezer back at home is full of deer meat, and you start thinking, "why am I even out here?" I guess it got so entrenched into my mind that because the season was open I was 'supposed' to be hunting.
Deer season is only for 4 months. Life happens for 8. Its easy to forget what life is all about if you let deer season control your every thought. As the saying goes, "whatever you can't get enough of, THAT has become your god."
That's not where I wanna be.

Maybe I can get re-acquainted with my wife again now.

Got trees to cut, cameras to put back up to see what bucks survived, Tractor repairs to make to get ready for Spring planting and bush hogging, seeds to order, trees to prune, fertilize and mulch....deer season never really ends. \:\)

And then there are crows to shoot until Feb 28 also. Love hearing those loud CAW CAW's responding to my call. At this point I'm burned out with the seriousness and lack of action that goes with actual deer hunting and am ready for a change.

I never even got to really go this season. Hunted less this season than I have in probably 20 years. About the time I started to get interested in going...work hit hard, and we went 7 days a week the entire time. I had spent most of my vacation going to the ASA Pro/Am shoots that I went to. Not gonna happen this year. Me and the wife are trying to put together an out of state hunt this yr. Either going to go after a mulie/pronghorn hunt out west, or a giant whitetail in the mid west. Gonna try to break this trend of only seeing button bucks and year old basket racks.

In the mean time...I am gonna get caught up on some Civil War relic hunting and picking up some arrowheads. I've missed doing that stuff. And dad and I are gonna catch us a 10 pound bass this year too...that's our plan for Feb-March on Lake Chickamauga.

Well, they are stocking the trout at percy dam, so that will be fun. Never really turkey hunted too much although I would like to. Right now I am looking forward to looking for sheds the most. I do have plenty of work to do so I am not confined to a couple areas this year.

There is always next season

This is a very true statement, HOWEVER there is not anything I would rather be doing than deer hunting, so while it is true it is of no consolation and I will miss it until Sept. \:\(

After the season I've had, I'm glad it's over. I have 3 college courses left. Spring semester I'm taking 2 of the 3. Hope to take the last one in the Summer and graduate.

We broke camp on Sunday. The site was muddy and the trailer was a mess. I made note of the extra stuff I'd stocked and didn't need and the stuff I'll bring next year. I miss it already.

At our camp, some of the retired guys stay in camp 4-5 days a week and most of us working folks hit it every weekend plus vacation days. We have a group meal cooked in the cook tent in the evening. After dinner we sit by the wood burning stove and talk about what we did and didn't see that day and life in general. The experienced guys have so much wisdom to share and some of it relates to hunting.

If someone needs help trailing a deer, loading a deer, starting a 4 wheeler, help is always there.

Some of the guys have camped together for many years and some of us are new comers. Some are older, some are younger and all are from varied backgrounds. They are all great people who love the out of doors, hunting, and helping each other. Mutual acceptance and respect is the order of the day.

Many of these deer hunters I won't see for another 8 months, but I look forward to next season so I can spend more time in camp with them.

If I'm fortunate enough to kill a few deer next season, so much the better. The experience will be great either way and that's why I miss it already.

that sounds like an awesome deer camp. Is it a club, lease or just family land?

It's a club-lease in Rhea county. 5,000 acres with 50+ members, but never seems crowded...

There's a core group of 20 or so who camp in trailers and tents and come and go all season. After the second week of gun, there's often less than 4-6 hunting during the week with 10-15 on weekends...

Great bunch of guys to hang with and they kill a few deer..I think the club checked out over 80 this year..I managed to get my share, but the hunting is only part of the fun of being with this bunch. Camp fire time is great too...

Currently, $500.00/year for year round use of the land. Deer, turkey, yote hunting, hiking, 4 wheeling (5 mi of trails) etc.

$50.00 more to camp which helps pay for porta john, camp food, camp generator, gas, community cook tent and firewood.

Beekeeper has details. I'm a relative newbie (3yrs)...
