A friend just purchased a M1 A1 and has no thoughts of adding optics.

Tried my peeps out today, def need to practice lol. My eye doesn't like to focus on the front sight for some reason. It tries to focus on the rear sight the longer I look through it. Any suggestions? If I pull up and shoot quickly it works great but if I slow down and take my time it goes south.

I've seen that happen when someone is closing one eye as they aim. If you can, make sure both eyes are open. I know you probably know this already but ignore the rear sight and try to focus only on the front. Your eye will automatically center your front sight in the rear sight.

Also, some people like to cover the target with their sight and that's fine up close on game but I like a tight six o'clock hold. To me its easier shooting for group at longer distances that way and my group sizes shrank considerably when I started using that hold. Good luck!!

Exactly.
Takes practice, but definitely learn to keep both eyes open when using any non-scoped sight especially.
Your brain will soon learn to focus with the left eye at a distance (right hand shooter) and with the right eye sight picture.
That's the way I was taught by Sgt. McAmis in ROTC back in 1976, using an Anschutz .22 at the National Guard Armory in Cleveland.
Worked then, works now.

Looks like being left eye dominate bites me in the butt again. I've never been able to keep both eyes open while shooting. All I can see when I try that is what's in my left eye (I shoot right handed). I do have a pair of shooting glasses that I made out of a pair of safety glasses that I wear when sighting guns in and doing load development that may help me with the peeps. I covered one side with scotch tape so I can keep both eyes open and only see whats on the right eye. I'll try them next time I shoot the peeps.

Here she is in all of her glory though. 1979 Remington 700 ADL in 270 Win. sporting the good ol' Williams rear peep sight.

Hey that's a nice rifle! You did good. My wife is left eye dominant and had the same problem. We have her shooting left handed now and even though it was an adjustment, she's doing great ( with a pistol ).

yeah the Merit would work well,,something about the size of the peep hole helps your depth of field ,,whatever it does it works,,on bright days adjust the hole smaller and it will focus the front sight and vice versa

Try the Williams twilight aperture. It has a brass ring that aids in low light conditions. I have them on several rifles and it is an excellent sight.
