Has anyone tried making a high gloss laminate stock to a more matte finish with any success? I have one that shines like a new penny and would much prefer it to have a flatter finish. I was told to try some fine steel wool but I'm afraid it would turn out with a lot or swirl marks in the finish.

Burlap will knock the shine down too. Really any fine abrasive would knock the shine down but keep in mind you'll also be removing some of the finish. I like the gloss laminates though. Helps bring out the grains in the wood.

Fine steel wool will work nice with out leaving swirls. look for 000 or 0000 steel wool at your local hardware store.

Be very careful on the edges as you may cut through the finish and down to bare/raw wood exposing it to the elements. A sure way to prevent that, remove the stock from the gun, strip all hardware off of it, sand it lightly with ultra fine sand paper and respray a new top coat of satin finish on it.

OR

Strip the gloss finish off and put a really nice hand rubbed tung oil finish back on, non gloss and really makes the wood pop.

I use 0000 steel wool and Birchwood Casey stock wax. Then buff it off with a cotton cloth. It will leave a butter smooth finish and gives it just the right look. The wax is a paste type and I am guessing any paste wax would work I just happen to have a bottle of the BWC. Here is a picture of a Mauser Sporter I am building that is done that way.

Listen to this guy. He's redone some guns and they are amazing looking.
