With building reverse flow smokers? I have a 15 ft trailer and a 500 gallon diesel tank that I am going to turn into a reverse flow smoker. This is my first go at this and was wondering if anybody could tell me what size the fire box will need to be for a cooker this size. I read somewhere that it needs to be 25% of the size of the cook chamber but that's a 125 gallon fire box. Other question for you guys with smokers what kind of thermometer's do you use? I have Old Smokey thermometers on my smoker I use now but they are about 40 degrees from accurate. I'm looking at some of the upper end Tel-Tru thermometers. Sorry for the long post just looking for some insight.

Will do! Looking forward to getting it started. Working on design now but will hopefully start construction in the next week or so. Will be a spare time project so progress may be slow, but I will post pictures along the way.

Hope this helps

http://www.smokerbuilder.com/reverse-flow-smokers/

according to the article, the fire box needs to be @ 30% the size of the smoke chamber for heat/cooking reasons.

I appreciate it FullDraw! That's going to be a massive fire box, but I want to do it right. So what I have planned is cutting one large door out of the tank(I cook a lot of whole hogs is the reason I'm not going with two doors). The fire box which is going to be 45x30x30 will be made from 1/4" plate. The reverse flow plate will be 1/4" plate. All racks are going to be removable, the bottom rack is going to be one large cook surface while the second and third rack level will be divided into two sections each. Exhaust will be a 6" pipe 5' long and will extend down to 1" above the bottom cook surface. I have ordered 5 tel-tru thermometers for the cook chamber. I'm still trying to iron out what type of hinges I will use on the cook chamber door and how to counter weight the door. I hope some of what I just said makes since.

Make your own hinges with pipe and solid rod, if you can........find an old/used torsion spring and cable set up(the style that is mounted over the door between the tracks) off of an overhead door, you can adj. the tension on the coil spring as needed for more or less lift.
