Well, my dad knocked off the number one buck on our hit list here in east Tennessee. This buck came out 45 minutes before dark to feed on daikon radishes in one of our hunting plots. This hunting plot has been strategically placed and provides deer a secure location to feed. A lot of time and hard work went into creating this specific hunting spot!

This is a 5-year-old buck with a live weight of 200 lbs (not bad for a mid-December buck!). I rough-scored him at 146. This is the second 5-year-old buck that scored over 140 that we've taken the past 3 years!

Congratulations! Obviously you work hard at it and are a well above average deer hunter. I'm curious to know how much land you have control over to be able to see bucks like this in east TN? What about the surrounding land? Large tracts or lots of small tracts with many owners? Amazing how you keep dragging monster bucks out of the woods!

That is a pretty good example of how it takes age to make up for mediocre soil. A lot of places can grow bucks like that at 3.5 to 4.5 years old. Most of us in TN have to let them get to 4.5 or 5.5 to get some in the 140" class, and then most will only make to the 130" class at 5.5.

We have rougly 1,500 acres. However, most of the land is rugged and not accessible. It's hard to have a small tract of land over here due to the terrain.

Thanks. I thought you must have a big piece of property like that to not have neighbors drooling right on the border to shoot those bucks before they get that old.

You also have to consider that, from his descriptions at least, String Music does what 97% of other hunters are, for all practical purposes, incapable (yep) of doing; pinpointing bedding areas and successfully hunting them. I've tried and ain't cut out for it. -mad respect to anyone that can do that consistently and successfully because it takes a serious, hardcore, dedicated, disciplined hunter employing tactics far beyond the motivations of everyday deer hunters, even self described "serious" deer hunters. Its the kind of tactics you can read about and daydream about during the offseason, but, when it comes down to it just don't really have the deep down motivation to pull off, nor the confidence to "break the rules" of deer hunting that have been hammered into your head.

Habitat management can do wonders for antler growth. But you can't manage the habitat of an entire region.

If you look at the average antler size of bucks killed in the eastern-most counties--not just from individual managed properties--you will find older bucks from the mountains average far less antler per age-class than you would ever believe. The average 3 1/2 year-old buck from some of the eastern counties would be considered a well below average 2 1/2 year-old for other parts of the state.

Very true. Even when bucks reach maturity on our property, it's only the ones with good genetics that produce impressive racks. This buck represents that very small percentage.

Despite being the same age, this buck dwarfs the mature buck I shot two weeks ago. Same region, same nutrition, same age, but different genetics.

Glad you liked it! I haven't had the time to update it in a LONG time, though!

Did you keep a jaw bone from him? If so can you post pictures of it?

The taxidermist is saving it for me. When I dropped this buck off I got the jaw bones from two of the bucks I shot earlier this year. I'll post the jaw bones in the pics thread soon.
