Can you shoot steel through a poly choke?

Polychokes made prior to 1954 ( I could be wrong on that date) can not be recommended for steel shot. The reason is they did not know the metallurgy of the steel used in the polychoke

Polychokes made after 1954 could be used with steel shot

Here's how you tell the difference between a pre and post 1954 choke

If the choke tube is knurled, at the end, it is a post 54 choke and OK for steel shot

pre 54 chokes will have vertical lines or (groves) at the end of the choke.
