Here's what was left of my Hornady 300gr SST that I shot my 6 point with. He was quartering toward me slightly. The bullet went in the upper shoulder just behind the neck and deflected toward the rear. I found it just under the skin in the ribcage right in front of the hind quarter. There were a couple other copper fragments with it that I didn't save. They were almost as big around as a dime.

I don't have a coin for comparison, but the lead core that you see is just a tad larger than the original diameter of the bullet.

No blood trail, but dropped in his tracks at ~60 yards.

How much powder do you use? I have mine sighted with 100 grains 777 (2 pellets).

I went back to no. 11 primers and 100 grains of loose pyrodex. I've had the same results with 2 777 50gr pellets.

I've never recovered a 300gr SST from a deer.

Both of my recoveries were high shoulder/neck shots. Both dropped in their tracks about 60 yards from me. All my other shots with SSTs have been pass through shots.
