A distinctly cold day, but with the rut nigh, had to go. Sat a first time spot in a semi-familiar area, about 50 yards from my truck. About 7 I buck grunted, and shortly heard a commotion in a nearby thicket. A does busts out, looks around, and runs past right under me. More commotion, and I see a tall tine move in the thicket; that's all it was, just one tall tine on a punk buck. He sniffs around, walks under me, and eventually moseys off. The little doe, feeling rejected, soon follows.

An hour later I grunt again, and again a commotion. Here comes a doe w/ two young. I put the crosshairs on her at maybe 15 yards. BOOM! When the smoke clears she is standing 30 yards out, on high alert, needing no health coverage. I am feverishly trying to reload w/o moving, totally confused. She runs off, but up in front of me I hear more steps coming and see a nice doe feeding towards me in the brush. Get reloaded, primer in, scope long enough to make sure there are no antlers, BOOM! Deer is obviously hit hard and piles into thick stuff.

Still confused, I replay the first shot. Here is my picture window:

Then it dawns on me:

That splintered limb was apparently my nemesis. I get down to look for blood, and it's easy and plentiful. Two holes and a heart split in two. Unfortunately it was neither mature nor a doe, but we are thankful for the meat!

Checked one of those Sat night along with a half racked deer. Hate killing a youngster like that, but they do eat good.

Shouldn't tell this on myself but Saturday morning, I hit the same limb twice, shooting at two different deer. Sunday morning though I redeemed myself. Congrats on the meat in the freezer.

congrats on the meat.

I did same thing Saturday morning I passed one deer thinking it was to small then later that morning I shot what I thought was a mature doe...turned out to have little nubs but he was as big as the adult doe my dad had killed...he was missing the pug nose that I look for in yearlings...so I don't know if he was genetically messed up or a really fast growing youngun

That'll eat good.

There are a dozen or so dead limbs in Humphreys County courtesy of the Silent Sicilian ;\) Figure a day to get up there next week. I shop for seafood this evening!

The Silent Sicilian? ROFL!

If I kill any more deer, I'm gonna have to start throwing out store-bought from the freezer just to make room!

And I'm ok with that! \:D
