So, I let my dad borrow my .54 cal TC renegade muzzle and he somehow managed to cross thread the nipple and foul the breech plug. I got the bullet removed and also managed to get out the nipple but the threads are shot and it seems like the breech is shot. I read online that removing the breech on these old TCs is a bad idea but Track of the Wolf sells a new breech plug and I really want together the smoke pole back in action. Any suggestions out there on if this can be done and also any gunsmith recommendations in middle tn that could help remove and install new plug?

Thanks!!!

Thanks! If I call Track do you think they'll be able to figure out which size nipple will work best? Also, I'm concerned there is something blocking the hole from nipple into breech. If I shine a light through breech should I be able to see light looking down the barrel?

Thanks!

Im sure they may have someone there that can help with this problem. Your current nipple size is 1/4x28 thread and track of the wolf has a sizing chart for the sizes they recommend.

Put a tiny LED light into the nipple hole and then look down the bore, sometimes its very hard to see light in that powder channel, but its worth a try.

shoot i found it in the magazine.

You can get rethreading taps that are + .005" over size, all the way up to .025" over sized. They also have the over sized nipples.

The breech plugs I see on Track's site are for use in rebarreling TC's using after market barrels such as Green Mountain. The thread pitch for most all these are different from TC's oddball 11/16-20 thread. I've used one myself to rebarrel an old Seneca. FG's advise might be your best bet.

Tip Curtis in Cross Plains has tons of parts for muzzle loaders. He more than likely has that oversize nipple. Give him a call at 615-654-4445 explain what's going on and he'll probably give you a tutorial as well.

Man, y'all are the best. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I am new to the black powder game and don't know enough to keep me out of trouble!

Get some wire fishing leader or Piano wire and snake it in there to clean out the flash hole. It could be carbon fouled.

Try a small piece of copper wire or give it a shot of compressed air with a air nozzle. I think my Hawkens has a removable screw on the end of the breech plug so one can clean it out if it gets plugged up with crud.
