Been out of muzzle loading for years and forgot most everything. I am shooting a TC Renegade and TC Hawkins (son's). Both. 50 Cal. Can anyone tell me what bullet/powder combo they like the best..?

TC's website still has the old manual to view or download. It has all the load data for their tradition guns.

If you can get it use real black powder, otherwise, pyrodex.

In mine and my son's TC Renegade .54's we shoot 100 grains Pyrodex RS and T/C Maxi-Hunter conical bullets with a TC wonderwad between the bullet and powder. For your .50 perhaps a charge starting around 80 grains then work between 80-100 to find best accuracy. The rate of twist in those rifles require patched round balls or maxi-balls, no sabot loads.

Is a sabot the same as a powerbelt? That is what I was shooting through my renegade with 777 ffg powder until my dad screwed up the gun

I use 80 grains of FF Black powder in my 50 caliber T\C Hawkin rifle . If I start running short of my favorite FF Black powder load well then I load 30 grains of FF Black powder in first then I use a 50 grain pellet of pyrodex on top of the black powder. The black-powder goes off easier and it will assure that pyrodex ignites and the bullet leaves the barrel at a good velocity. I have mostly always used this load because its getting harder and harder to get real black powder now.

Oh man. I played with my TC Renegade smoke pole for a long time. Ended up with needing 90g of powder and one particular TC-240 projectile. Put 100g in there and it would put a flier out once in a while. Keep it at 90 and it was a tack driver at 70yds. So the pellet loads didn't work for me. 90g of loose and I was good to go. Funny thing about those older guns. Fussy.

pellets are not recommended in a sidelock due to the breech plug, it has to have the loose powder directly under the nipple.

Glad you got a load figured out, I always used 90gr pyrodex rs and a 295gr powerbelt in mine when i had one.

The need to use pellets only in a bolt action non-traditional rifle is a myth. Most likely used to sell new fangled rifles .
Interesting though. Pyrodex pellets safe in flintlock ?

tc and traditions have sidelocks DESIGNED for pellets, but why on earth you'd use them is beyond me, they are hard to ignite in a flintlock.

Use them if you want to, just dont whine when your rifle wont fire the next time you are aiming at a buck.
