Guys, my boy is really getting excited about next years youth deer hunt. Unfortunately dad has not got him a deer gun yet. So, sounds like a good Christmas gift this year. So for the ones of you who have little ones, what have you found to be best. Thanks

How old is your son? Is he a husky kid, "regular", or a slight build? I really like a .243 for kids, but they have to be good on shot placement. Later on it makes a great coyote gun, after he gets a .30 cal rifle for deer.
If you can find a 16" barreled 30-30 lever gun, that's a good starter. Especially, if the area you hunt is more woods than fields. Later in life he will like having that as a "brush gun".
Recoil management and the rifle being too long and heavy are concerns here, unless you hunt from a blind and use a monopod.

I used a Rem Model 7 .243 youth model with my kids. Small gun that shoots great with very little recoil. They were never scared to shoot it as they were with others.

Savage Axis youth model. Tack driving little guns in 243, I've had no experience with the 7mm08.

all boys love the lever action guns
i guess its the cowboy thing and a 30-30 is a proven deer slayer

I got a remington 700 .243 when I turned 10. Still have it. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've put 4 kids through a Remington Model 7 in a .243 youth model. If I had to do it again I wouldn't change a thing. Low recoil and that's a major factor with a youth.

Picked up a Ruger American 243 youth for the wife and kids. Shoots very well and seems very well built. Still prefer my 700 over it tho.

I have a good friend who has used with his sons and now with his grand sons a Ruger rifle chambered in a 44Mag Doesn't kick bad and gets the job done. The one he uses us bolt action.

30-30 is the most over-rated cartridge around. The only reason its killed more deer is because its older than everything except the Kentucky Rifle. And it still kicks a lot more than other cartridges. A .243 is way better for anyone, regardless of age. A 260 REM or 7mm-08 with reduced loads would be better for even the youngest hunter.

I picked up a Ruger M77 Compact in .243 with scope for $300 at a pawn shop a few years ago. My granddaughter has killed two deer with it, and I've killed two deer and a coyote with it. (I won't give anyone a gun to use if I wouldn't use it myself, so I carried it the first year before giving it to Valerie.)

A lever action 30-30 is probably one of the worst ideas for a youth that I can think of.

First of they are pretty heavy kickers for what they are. LOP on many of the models are pretty long at 14 inches. Many of the older models don't have recoil pads and the muzzle blast is pretty stout. Working the lever on a lever action can be a little tricky for a youngster too.

A short action bolt gun in small calibre has always been my suggestion. You can usually find a youth model or get a full size model and cut the stock down to fit LOP.

243 or 7mm 08 have been the classic cartridges. 6.5 Creedmore seems to be the modern trend if you are looking for something fresh. With TN adopting .223 a lightweight AR15 with a collapsible stock can make for a fun little cartridge with the proper bullet.

7mm08 has almost 4 more lbs of kick than a 243,id rather a kid shoot a full house load 243 than a reduced 7mm08 any day of the week, pull up a site & look at felt recoil , no lies to tell with facts just bs being pushed on little kids, all kids are not the same, Id hate to make 1 gun shy because I give them more gun than they can take ,just my $.02 lol

My 10 year old sons first hunting gun was a 308 youth model Rem 700. We hand loaded up some 110 grain Barnes X Solid Copper bullets. He hunted with that load his first few years of hunting till he ran out of hand fodder.

I must say of all the deer he killed with that load none of them twitched after getting shot with them and they made devastating wound paths. Look like they were hit by a tank.

If I had a small child today and was so inclined.. After looking at the chart posted above I would look real hard at getting a properly constructed 223 bullet and a ar15 or bolt action 223 and hunt with that. .223 and the right bullet will sure do the job!

recoil depends as much on the rifle as the round.

take 2 guns same weight in those calibers & the 08 will have almost 4lbs more recoil, yes a gun can make a difference, weight is what tames recoil ask any bench rest shooter. Like I said all kids are different & you need to work up the range of recoil. I have killed a lot of deer with a 243 but I have also with my 300wm. the 3030 I have killed several ,shotgun slugs deadly .crossbow deadly but no more than any other bow,the difference is the ability of the shooter to hold up the weight of a heavy rifle to tame the recoil. Lets just get them out there with as little fear of touching off the rifle so they will want to go back out. My granddaughter will be at them hard this year Im thinking,7 years old & no boy will out do her if she can help it \:\)

design and materials of the stock will make as much or more difference than the weight.

7mm-08 is hard to beat. The only draw back vs the 243, recoil set aside, is that the ammo does cost several dollars more per box and may be harder to find.

This is very true. My buddy had a Savage Axis in 243 for his boys and I went to the range with him and shot it and it felt like it kicked more than my 25-06. Def. more than any 243 I had shot before.

Whatever you end up getting, make sure you get a decent scope with good eye relief.

I bought a NEF Handi Rifle last year for my 10yo grandson. .243 youth model with a bull barrel. It came with a 4x12x40mm scope as a package deal for 279.00 but the scope was junk. I took it off and put a Nikon ProStaff 3x9x40mm on it for 149.00 and it is a sweet shooter and a tack driver. I love shooting it just as much as he does.
