We had a lease in Wayne county years ago. The first year we had it I found a old stand like that. I bet you that sucker was 35 feet high. I sat and looked at it a long time and the devil finally talked me in to climbing it. I couldn't let go of the tree when I got up there and I promised God if he let me get down safe I would never do that again. He did and I ain't! Be careful bud.

Don't you remember those in Lewis County , sucker's was ever bit of 35 ft.. I climbed up in one down that first clearcut in the big hollow and shot a coyote out of it but I got down before dark (skeered).

I used to love going out and building stands like that with my dad and uncle as a kid. Then we built a bunch of wooden ladder stands that we used forever. Now I only hunt out of my climber.

I was hunting on my friends property which had wooden ladder stands in 6 different places. I was in many of them and they were all pretty solid. One, however, near to killed me. I was siting in it and the wind was blowing, not hard, but start/stop and when I shifted my weight it moved. I had no lifeline,, harness, nothing. I stood up and it started to slide and I had no choice but to grab hold of the trunk. The stand was cockeyed on the tree and as I put weight on it it completely came loose and ther I was, tree huggin about 14 feet up. I wasn't scared but I as I shimmied down the tree my jacket and then my pants caught on a nail. With my legs wrapped around the tree I chanced a one handed hold and unhooked the jacket, the pants just tore. Went to my Friends house, told him what happened and he went out and tore down the remaining 5.

Okay, here's the real story. All those stands were no more than 3 winters old, all made with nails and treated lumber.

You be careful.

It's about 20 feet up. I hung a lifeline this summer so I have been hooked up as soon as I leave the ground every time I hunted it this year. I don't plan to hunt it anymore, might buy a crowbar and try to tear it down, or at least remove the steps. Might hunt it 1 more time this year, not sure. Sucks the last deer I shot out of it, I never recovered.

Well, today I laid her to rest. Got 2 seasons out of it. The tree is bare but the memories are still there. First bow kill (1st 3 actually) from that tree.

It was still sturdy, but I wasn't going to hunt it another year, to be safe...
