Amazing deer! The fronts on that pig are huge.

Unfortunately his backs weren't as strong...if they had of been, he'd made 180. That's okay though as have a good excuse to go back sometime :)!

Well, seems like I have some saving to do!!
I've done to DIY hunts in UT (with a local) to no avail. Pretty country and a lot of fun, but I'm burning 2 weeks of leave each time and tons of money.

Thanks for the leads on guides.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a diy hunt. I hope I still have a bunch of 'em left in me to do. Have 2 teenage grandsons now & I certainly can't afford guided hunts for 3 of us at a time. I have been building pionts for all of us for years in CO, WY & UT and plan to start cashing them in before long on diy hunts.

That said, unless you have enough points or willing to pay a premium price for a landowner tag, then a guided hunt on private ground is the best way to go if you are serious about a mature deer.

Speaking of points, anybody who is serious about western huntng should at least be building them in WY. They went to the points system 7 years ago, so even if you start now, your only 7 behind max points. In CO, your behind 20+,and I have no idea about UT or AZ, but it is more than CO...

A good mule deer in UT is really hard to find unless you are fortunate enough to draw in some of the premier southern units. Have a buddy that lives there and is an outfitter and will probably use him for scouting purposes whenever (if)we draw a tag.

MT has potential for a decent OTC tag, except for the fact they cost as much as a trespass fee. In the future years I plan to tag on a MT hunt after a WY hunt. I really want to hunt mule deer during the rut, so MT offers that on an OTC tag.

Lots of places to hunt mule deer in the West, however the wolf and grizzly is making it harder and harder and adds a whole other element to the hunt...one I dont care about at this point.

You are correct about MT, but the latest increase on NR's has just about made me swear off of them. We use to hunt the MO River Breaks with OTC tags, but that was 20 yrs ago...

Have a couple outiftter friends that the wolves in ID panhandle put them out of the elk hunting business.
