Anyone have some experience with this knife?
I got one last week and used it for the first time this morning to field dress a deer. Man, is this thing sharp!

I was wondering how durable they are, and how many uses can you get out of one blade (normal field dressing), before needing to replace?

It will really depend on your technique. If you continue to muscle through cutting, you'll wear out the blades. If you let the blade do the work, then 2-3 Southeastern Whitetails, depending on size.

I used one today. I broke three blades and while they are sharp to start I wish they held a better edge longer. It's cheaper in the long run than the Z blade knives I've been using so will probably switch over for that reason alone.

You have to adhust your technique for a Havalon. I broke some blades at first, too. If you are breaking them, you aren't using the knife correctly.

Does breaking the blades come from putting too much pressure on them or from bending them while cutting?

I got a Havalon for the first time this year that I hope to use next Saturday.

Agreed there is probably a learning curve. Since they seemed to dull so quickly I was pushing beyond the useful limits, hence breaking them. Granted, I was skinning a 700lb bull.

From using it for the first time yesterday, all it takes is a very gentle touch. The skin just "unzips" itself.
My butcher uses one for skinning and likes it. He said you have to be very careful as the blade is so sharp. This was in the back of mind when reaching up into the chest cavity to cut the esophagus and windpipe with a blind cut.
I still used a standard knife to split the rib cage.

I used mine for the first time today to skin out a head from last season. I didn't break a blade, but I still have some learning to do in order to get the most out of the knife.

Usually from twisting. The blades can't handle torque at all. You have to think more like a surgeon and less like a Buck knife ad.

In fairness to the knife, I butchered the whole animal, not just skinned it. You can't break a blade just skinning.
