If you buy a ford get the 7.3. If you buy a dodge get the 5.9. Had a 7.3 one time and getting rid of it was a big mistake. I have the 6.0 now and have had no issues. The problem with the first two I mentioned is people want gold for them with 150,000+ miles. I'm not paying $25-30,000 for a truck with that many miles.

Half ton is not rated for the camper we are getting.

I'm kind of in the same situation as you right now. After 4 years of trying to buy a friends boat he finally decides to sell it to me and I don't like the MPG or strain it puts on my Tacoma so I've started looking for a diesel truck to pull it with. A half ton gas truck would pull my boat fine but I figure I may as well get something made for pulling since I'll be taking it to Florida 3-4 times a year and pulling it with the Taco may turn it in to a Burrito before its all said and done.So now I'm looking to either buy a cheap(ish) or trade my hot rod S-10 toy for a diesel. Leaning towards a 5.9 Dodge

Wouldn't take nothing for my 7.3! Diesel is more expensive but mileage is better than a full sized gas burner and will last three times longer. Mine is not my daily driver but when I need to tow or haul it will do whatever I need it to and do it very well!

Since half ton was mentioned, what is the difference between a Chevy 1500 and a 1500HD?

That's what mine has (Chevy Crew 4x4 1500 HD) .Not great mileage but pulls my 30 ft . camper with ease 180,000 with little trouble (wheel bearings).

I didnt even know they made a 1500 hd . I have a buddy that has a white 2004 or 5 chevy 2500 HD extended cab 6.6 duramax with low mileage for sale . Seems like around 70,000 if you are interested let me know . He bought the truck because he drove my 04 crew cab GMC which is almost identical but he had to have that bow tie . If I needed a tow vehicle that is the truck I would buy .
