I can't get in touch with taxidermist and was wondering if anyone here had experience with tanning a deer hide to make a rug. Do i need to freeze it until i get it to taxidermist or do i need to get it stretched out. I have no experience here.

You can roll it and freeze it. My taxidermist has had them in the freezer for years and they still turn out fine. It's rather cheap to send it to a big tanner and have them do it or you can do the suggested youtube route. Brain tanning is the cheapest method.

roll it skin side in, hair side out....freeze.....there is a pretty decent diy kit for what you want, comes with instructions, tan, and oil. just remember though you will have to hand break it, meaning, make the skin side soft....there is another trick with out giving your hands the ultimate workout but your wife would probably kill me if i told you. lol.....I think mckenzie taxidermy supply or van dykes taxidermy supply sells the kit, i would have to look it up in a catalog but you can find it online

I used the Van Dykes kit once and it came out pretty good for my first one. Just make sure to flesh the hide real good.

i've done a few myself.. first few turned out like hard as a 2x6.. last few turned out great! Lots of work involved if you decide to do it yourself, but its rewarding...
