I have heard some good things about the Ductless Mini Split systems. Most of what I know are for smaller installs and adding Ac to additions or bonus rooms.

How are they for a new construction/whole house application?
1300sf Basement + 1300sf 1st floor with 1/2 open to cathedral ceiling + a 600sf half loft second floor? Log construction with open beam ceilings so running ducts will be difficult.

Thanks!

I think it would have all kinds of trouble keeping it cool outside of the room the unit was in....

Compressor is outside, a thin copper line and an electric wire are all you run to the unit on the wall inside. One wall unit per zone. Seer rating is 18 or better on most.

Man I've put quite a few of them in. Mostly in commercial areas and mostly in computer rooms or labs that need to be at a correct temperature. That being said, something like a liebert unit could work for a whole house but I doubt you could do it ductless. They basically build the floor up sometimes a foot (which sucks running the copper to when you have to crawl around under it) up to 24 inches is the biggest I've dealt with. They basically just pump a bunch of cold air under the floor and have a few "grill" tiles that allow the cold air to go up through it. I've seen these things cool server rooms that have a TON of servers. I'm not sure how you could make this application work for you but I believe that you could get one big enough to take care of it probably. I think you would be happier using a regular central air system because honestly they are just basically more efficient window units.

Inkstainz I don't think he is talking about Liebert witch is designed for server rooms not houses.
That being said I have never liked working on the ductless types.

Multi-split unit is probably something you could do.
No duct work involved

If you are seriously thinking about ductless mini splits, make sure you consider Mitsubishi. They perfected the inverter technology before most other brands out there. Just a thought.

Absolutely not!

Go with (2) 2-ton units and split them that way. Under no circumstances will your house support one split-system. That vaulted ceiling is what'll do you in. Also, invest in an adjustable (and reversible) ceiling fan. Your utility bills will thank you.

I put some in over the years & they work fairly well but the ones 6-7 years ago didnt have a memory on the thermostat & if a power outage you had to hit the on button again.big open high ceilings are a challenge for any type of system.put the ductless system in for the upper floor & normal system for the main floor.l.nothing sez the whole house has to be ductless.just use it where it is needed.1 thing about the ductless is the ease of zone control.turn off a room & the unit slows the compressor down so no damage or wasted energy
