never have duck hunted, never really had much interest, or bought a duck stamp or anything. but see wood ducks a lot in creeks and flushed over a dozen in one creek while turkey hunting recently. I also know a pond where they come in every evening and leave in the morning, in pretty good numbers. who all hunts em and are they good eating? I know you can only kill 2 in a day. Not sure when regular season opens. Worth getting the duck stamp and some steel shot for? I guess that decision is up to me, but how do they eat?

If duck is cooked right it is great.
If it is not, it tastes like liver and I spit it out. \:D

I have always wanted to kill a male wood duck and have it mounted. They are beautiful birds.

I figure if I don't hunt with tophat this year he is gonna kill me, so maybe I will. \:D

Yeah I know. \:D
You need to text me what kind of shells I need.

Also, do I need a special choke for steel shot?

Wood ducks come to my pond every year. I have a nest box for them and its used every year. As soon as the ducklings hit the water the hen takes them into the woods never to be seen by us again.

I believe Wood ducks are 3/day.
Next to teal, woodies are the best duck to eat. But I love duck meat. Medium rare or throw it in the trash. About the only duck I deem not fit to eat would be mergansers. Shovelers can be bad depending where they are feeding.
Jump shooting them from creeks can be fun but from past experience a roost pond like you described is almost impossible to hunt legally. Unless you can get the perfect weather, ie.. Very cloudy evenings or super foggy mornings. Or if you can set up between them and pass shoot them coming or going. Wood ducks are masters at knowing what time shooting light begins and ends. Lol.

Wood ducks that are here now will probably migrate before the late duck season opens.

Wood ducks is some fine eatin!! Good thing about a woodie is you can get them in timber or fields. You never know where they will pop up. They do migrate but the banding operations in Tn, Ky and FLA the last 20 years has shown that they migrate more East to West and normally will leave an area only due to to much pressure or lack of water and food or course. You can harvest 2 per day on the early September season and 3 per day on the late season.

The wood ducks that stay at a few of our private places never leave. We have wood duck boxes at each place which helps and we shoot very few of them each season.

But they are some fine eatin thats for sure!
