My labor day weekend plots are all dead. Rained all summer, then when I planted it rained just enough to get germination. Hasn't rained enough to keep ground moist. Now everything has withered and died.

Is too late to replant in Southeast TN?

Not much to lose if you use mainly winter wheat ---- good chance you'll get it going. IMO, winter wheat is your best bet for late Oct and even into early Nov. It will be S-L-O-W to get going.

Each year I'm tempted to plant on Labor Day weekend (in large part because I unusually have some free time available then) the wise words of Dr. Woods resonate, "More seed is wasted on Labor Day than any other day." \:D

You CAN get some great plots by planting early --- but you CAN frequently NEED to re-plant. Year-to-year, I believe most of us can do better by waiting until the week after Labor Day to start, although sometimes the early planters have the best plots.

I have a bunch of oat seed. Will it still germinate and grow or is it too late for it?

May have to visit the Co-Op tomorrow and get some winter wheat.

I would expect some germination, just may be slow to do so --- same with oats or wheat regarding that.

If I had oats on hand, would sure use them. If buying anything new to plant in coming week, would mainly go with wheat.

I prefer broadcasting oats with some wheat mixed with it ---- that mix seems to "broadcast" better than pure oats, oat seeds being too light to really work well in many spreaders. If convenient, would sure get some wheat to mix in with those oats.

And if you're going to the Co-Op anyway, get some crimson clover to throw into your mix ---- 2 or 3 lbs of crimson per 50 lbs of the wheat/oats can really "fill in" some otherwise bare spots, and give you a tad more forage, particularly in April/May.
Besides, it's "pretty" during turkey season. \:\)
Co-Op should sell the crimson cheap by the pound.

Oats will do fine planted this late. I've planted many plots late like this before with no trouble. You don't want them tall anyway or the deer won't graze on them as good. If you've already fertilized I wouldn't worry about doing it again. But if you haven't be sure and do it now. If your not fertilizing at all I wouldn't even bother planting.
