Tipton County. Still not sure if it's related to rut activity or not but, when I was in the stand this morning I had a doe run in like she was on fire and she stopped right under my stand for a minute and she was breathing real heavy. She was also looking back towards where she came in at. Maybe it was just dogs chasing her but I didnt hear any barking or anything.

If it would have been November instead of October I would have swore a buck was chasing her. I didnt shoot her just cause I wanted to see what else was behind her. That was the only deer I saw from daylight to 10 a.m.

Nice thread by the way UT Grad.
I havent seen any scrapes and only two rubs to speak of.

Rut will be wide open when muzzleloader opens in smith/ jackson counties. Usually going strong by the 15th. That being said trailcam pics showed a dramatic increase on oct. 14,15 of this year. Young bucks starting to mess with does a little. Older deer not moving so much yet. Its coming and gonna be an awesome year!!

A local that hunts on our lease in Marshall County swears the rut is going to come early in that area. He's been seeing scraps, rubs the buck he killed had smelly tarsals.

Thanksgiving week and the week after is when the mature bucks are up and cruising is Somerville (fayette county). If it's cold during muzzleloader, there is a great chance of killing one as well.

Judging from what i know about Rutherford County, and past ruts, on my land it will be here around the time ML opens (cruising/seeking phase) and about the time Gun opens they will be chasing on my property. then around thanksgiving they will be in peak breeding.

Trail-cam pics of bucks chasing does all over in food plots. Older bucks hitting scrapes pretty hard. Older bucks sparring in scrapes and in food plots almost nightly. But also still seeing large groups of bucks in food plots.

Alot of sign popped up within the last week in Hickman. Scrapes and rubs just about everywhere, but a little less than last year at this time. Finally got all my cameras over scrapes/mock scrapes. Just about every location I went to place cams (where I first made mock scrapes several years ago), there were already huge scrapes there. Will check them Sunday of Juvy.

I was checking some food plots today, and walking out I heard deer running. I thought I jumped them and squatted down. I doe jumped out in the rd and if I hadn't waived my arms she would have run over me. She turned and an 2-3 yr old 8 pt was right behind her, running hard. I don't know if she's in Or not, but it was exciting to see. He was DEFinately chasing.

Got a late start on putting my cams on mock scrapes this year, but only 2 out of my 7 usual mock scrape locations didn't already have a scrape there. Everywhere I went to put my scrapes, there were already 2 or 3 scrapes already there or a scrape there the size of a car hood. Will be interesting on Sunday when I check them. I peed in all of them

Found a few scrapes this weekend and the Bucks are still together.
Seems it happens every year, a few scrapes show up and then it goes dry. Eventually the rut kicks in.
Probably on schedule but it appears to be less then normal sign for now.

We are seeing scrapes and tree rubs in Williamson County and bucks cruising here in Rutherford but no real signs of the rut kicking off. Typical pre-rut activity.

A buddy shot a buck this morning in Maury co that was dogging 3 does. Unfortunately a bad shot and we tracked a good ways and no deer. But anyway he got it on video and he was definitely after those does. At least a 2 year old.

2.5 buck I killed tonight had just a tiny stank... Nothing to phone home about though.

Tarsal glands seemed pretty black... I'm not sure how dark they typically are/get. Pretty sure he had just hit a scrape bc his legs/Tarsal glands were wet with pee.

I'm learning all this stuff still, so please tell me if that's noteworthy or not.

yesterday when I shot a doe and only saw does and fawns I was sitting over a bunch of big rubs and a few scrapes. I guess in the next week or so, big boys might be out more during the day

Scrapes have exploded near Hardeman/Fayette county in the last week. Still not seeing many rubs. Haven't seen any bucks chasing but I'm sure the youngins are at it. It's not happening (and shouldn't be) yet. If we had cold weather I wouldn't be surprised to see it a week early this year starting around Nov 17th.

Nothing here in North Williamson. Bucks are still just feeding and some are still running together. Does are working scrapes more than the bucks, it is a strange season so far.

Oddly enough I got two mature bucks on camera in daylight in mid October. For one of them it was the first daylight picture ever since I got him on camera last year.

Since then not much.

That's what I'm seeing here in Lawrence, I've found 1 scrape and a few rubs, I got my cameras over mock scrapes and have a bunch of does checking scrapes with a stray buck walking by every now and then, usually by Halloween there are rubs and scrapes everywhere.

Older bucks are definitely on the cruise in my area. A brother-in-law (who was bow-hunting) saw two of them today. Both bucks were "on a mission," not lackadaisically feeding are walking along.

Mature bucks are starting to hit scrapes in daylight as well.

I did the same in SE Marshall. Saw TONS of deer! Only saw small bucks.. no sparring or chasing, yet. A friend that hunts in NE Marshall said he saw some sparring and chasing yesterday. I guess it's starting to heat up.

Got two young bucks sparring on camera Friday morning. Had some older bucks on camera still traveling together last week also. Rub and scrape activity is low for this time of year on our lease. Saw two bucks together Wednesday, no response to grunting. Nothing here to really get me too excited.

I'm on a lease in Marshall County and traditionally chasing is during rifle season. I didn't see much sign except for a huge rub on Sunday.

Other folks are just starting to see chasing in their area but BSK you've already seen it for a week now. Do you think your area is a little out of synch or do you think you have better observation of what's going on?

The rut at my location is and has been considerably advanced from surrounding areas for a number of years. I strongly suspect it is our localized adult sex ratio and buck age structure that drive our earlier rut. The rut is at least a week earlier on my property than at Cathole Lease (several TNdeer users are members of that lease) which is almost next door to my property. I have cousins with property that is 8 miles south from mine as the crow flies, and their peak breeding is probably 7-10 days later than mine.

UTGrad,

It's important to remember that rut timing (if we define the rut as the period when the most does are in estrous) varies from county to county, farm to farm within a county, and doe family group to doe family group within a farm.

Also, as much as estrous timing, a hunter's observation of rutting activity will be driven by the conditions on the day he hunts.

It's hard to gain much insight from the observations of other hunters unless you hunt the same property. Even then, two hunters can hunt the same property on the same day. One may have the best day of hunting, with lots of rutting activity observed. The other may have the worst day and see nothing.

North Williamson I hunted Thursday all day and saw bucks up to 3 years old. I started out in a stand up on top at a bedding area but after first light the wind was just too strong there. At about 6:30 or 7am I made a dreaded move; I was not in the right place and I knew it. I moved down onto a shelf about 500 yards from my previous location to get on the leeward side of the wind. I bumped what I thought was the buck I was hunting with a doe. The doe went east, he went west and I assumed he was with her so I grunted and then started setting up. I saw him coming back about 5 minutes later so I quickly pulled my bow up, but it turned out to be a younger buck than I was wanting to shoot. He eventually turned around and went back down the ridge. I watched him make several scrapes at a field edge and I rattled to see his reaction. He didn't do much but another buck came down and challenged him. They both postured for a little while and I thought they would fight but to my surprise they both settled down and started grooming each other on the neck. It was very bizarre; I've never seen anything like it. I just assumed they already knew each other from the summer months. I grunted a few times and the other buck a 10 responded and came right to me. I got some great video of him rubbing and scraping. That 10 was super aggressive and responded well. Every buck I observed had nearly white tarsals, so I think for us they will be seeking and scraping. We may see some chasing but I think we are still out a week or so but only time will tell.

Can't wait to see what everyone else is seeing after this weekend.

Yesterday 11/9 in Rutherford County. I had a 4 pt running a doe. her mouth was open and her tongue was hanging out.

late that day I had a doe cross out in front of me and a spike was tailing her, but not running.

Today I screwed the hunt up, so I saw nothing.

Saw a nice buck chasing a non-receptive doe Friday around Primm Springs in Hickman County.

All older bucks seen so far during MZ season in west Humphreys County have just been cruising--moving along at a faster than normal pace and behaving like they are "on a mission" to get somewhere. Scraping activity had fallen off dramatically. Observed only one chase on camera Nov. 10. A few buck confrontational pics at scrapes (not sparring but actual aggressive body posturing). Does observed with fawns over the weekend.

Sunday, in southern mid TN seen a six pointer with his nose to the ground, then he refreshed a scrape, then continued with his nose to the ground.

Then I seen a doe getting chased by a 3.5 year old 8 pointer. He finally caught up with her and then they bedded down about 15 yds apart from each other.
