Just over a week ago I put up a brand new Covert Black 60. I used a python lock but not a protective metal case. I notice the camera case itself seemed pretty flimsy. The cable goes through the back of the platic case, so you basically have to break apart the plastic to get it off.

I have got pics with a different camera of both a trespasser and a bear in that area. I have a treestand, big ladder stand, near the camera that wasn't touched.

When I put the camera up, I noticed an active yellow jackets nest right there. I went back at night and sprayed the nest killing it off. That's about 10 feet from where the camera was.

I went to check tonight and the camera is gone. The cable was still tight around the tree in the same place. There was one abrasion on the cable, where the rubber was scraped off and the cable exposed. Other than that it was fine. I instantly thought theft.

I then saw where the yellow jackets nest had been. The ground was dug out and it was empty except for dead yellow jackets at the bottom. The only think I can think of that would do that is a bear. The bear do seem to be attracted to the cameras.

So what was it.....a person or a bear?

If that is a road in the upper left side of the pic. I will say it was a person that got it.

That's a dock on a pond. Nowhere near a road but plenty of trespassers make their way through there. Usually they seen the camera and avoid it. I've gotten pictures taken when somebody was messing with it from behind, like this:

Never had one stolen though. The thing that tends to make me think it was a person, is that if a bear bit it off or pulled it, you would think some of the plastic case would be left with the cable.

Its been my experience that skunks are generally to thank for digging up yellow jackets, but regardless, I actually have had a bear take down one of my cameras, chomped it twice and discarded it about 75 yds from the tree. I wouldn't rule out a bear but since you have pics of the 2 legged variety I'd say that is where your camera went. However, if it was a bear I wouldn't think a bear would carry it far either.

I have heard that they are attracted to the smell of some plastics. You would think if a person stole it they would cut the cable JMO

Person, imo. I had a cam stolen early this year, with two stands set on either side of it about 75yds away, and could easily be seen when the leaves were off. I took the stands down, and put up a "surveillance" cam, and caught a guy coming thru at 4 a.m. on a Wed morning, heading directly toward one of the stands, shining his light up on the trees, as if looking for the ladder part of the stand. Good thing I saw the writing on the wall and took them down I think, or they would have been gone as well now I believe. Sorry low life scum sucking thieves...got something harsh coming to them if ever I catch them out there.

I'd put the odds at about 50/50 for either. The fact that you have a bear there, and the fact the cam was "ripped" off the tree remains highly suggestive of a bear, and if you had not previously seen any trespassers, you would be near certain it was a bear?

Carefully check about a 100-yr radius around the cam for any pieces. Hard to imagine a bear carrying it much farther than that before dropping. If you find no evidence of the cam nearby, probably a person took it.

Regardless, I'd want a bear-proof box before placing a new cam at that location.

After looking over thea area carefully in daylight, I feel certain it was a trespasser. Appears to be knife scores on the cable. I found one small piece of plastic under the vegetation....that means somebody picked up all the other pieces of broken plastic. Also appeared to be a knife mark on the plastic I found. I believe they tried to pry it off with a knife before smashing it with a rock or something. Lesson learned.....always use a heavy guage theft proof box and conceal them better.

I went around talking to people in the area including some possible suspects...nobody recognizes the guy in the pic. At least they will know that I keep an eye on the place.

Update:

So last month after a couple days of showing pics of the white guy, somebody from his family identified him. He gave me a call and swore he didn't take the camera. I did not believe or disbelieve him. But I was def suspicious of him.

I figured if it was not him, then whoever it was would probably be back, so I put up another camera with a lock box.

Sure enough, a few weeks ago by and I get a pics of these 2 clowns on 7 Nov. I checked the camera on 10 Nov and update the police report with the photos. The came in wearing hoodies, and got this pic of them leaving. You can tell they see the camera.

The next day, I am hunting from a treestand directly behind the camera. I am not in the stand 20 minutes when the guy with the sunglasses comes walking through with a hammer. He was right under my stand when he saw me. He talked to me for 5-10 minutes and came up with a bunch of lies about why he was there with a hammer. I told him he was trespassing and I would prosecute. As soon as he was out of sight I went back to the house and called the law. He was long gone by the time they showed. Talked to neighbors, five treestands have been stolen from the area.

Based on the pics, they were on my place for over an hour. Two guys, one pole, no fishing box. I don't think they were there fishing. I don't know if they were looking for treestands or casing the house or what.

The sherriff's department is completely unconcerned with the situation. They made a lazy attempt to catch them and didn't even give me a courtesy call when they didn't catch them. My mom lives on the property alone. I won't be back for a month. If catch them on my farm again I will make they understand there are consequences.

From experience..............I lost my very first trail cam I owned to a rather large black bear. But it was evident as there where pieces of chewed up camera/box, etc. all over the ground. He did not take it back to the cave for a trophy.
If you didn't find pieces around the area.........I am going to say human thief!!!!!!

This infuriates me! I know how you feel. You feel violated and stole from; they might as well have broke into your house and rifled through your things.

Do you own this property? Or does someone else and they allow fishing from the pond. Sucks your cam is gone. I would say a lowlife person took it and not a bear. Hate it for ya.

Sounds like he knew they were on camera and he was going to destroy the proof... as for fishing.... sounds like they were doing recon and holding an "excuse" for being in the area.

I'm sure the SD would be alot more motivated if a couple of dead bodies were laying on the ground.... after defending yourself.

Can you expand on this a little further because I'm having similar problems on my place? Are you swearing out warrants against him for trespassing or what?

Yes, in front of a magistrate.....different state though, VA. Guy has over 20 felony convictions, just got out after 17 years.
