Here's a little background for ya: I've lived in southeast TN my whole life, and have been within 40 minutes or so of Chickamauga Lake...and have never really fished it. We always went to Watts Bar, Tellico, etc. My dad has been wanting to catch a 10 pound largemouth for quite some time...and this was re ignited when he watched all the FLW Tour coverage from Chickamauga when they fished there in June. So needless to wanted to go fish Chickamauga really bad.

We got together this week and went to give it a whirl. We didn't know anything about it...other than where the winning angler of the FLW Tour tourney caught all his fish. So that's where we went. We got down there Monday morning about 8...and good Lord at the fishing traffic that lake gets! The ramp was about full...on a Monday! And you could tell the community holes for sure...they would have 2-3 boats on them at any given time.

At any rate...we set out trying for these big hawg bass. And it just didn't happen. We caught 2 largemouth that weren't even keepers. Then out of a "fluke", I was throwing a big lipless crankbait along the weedline, and got what turned out to be a 13" crappie. We didn't think anything about it until we decided to tie on the crankbaits and do some trolling. I had on a DD14 and dad had a Strike King something or other on. Not far into it...I had a fish. Another big white crappie. And long story short...this continued all day. We never caught another bass; all we were catching on these crankbaits were crappie. Pretty big crappie...not a one under 11 inches. I know crankbaits are popular for crappie...but those are usually the Bandit 200-300 series...or similar sized cranks. We were throwing very large cranks and catching them. I just though it was funny to go down there seeking big bass, and get into a mess of crappie on bass tackle. We didn't have anything to fish for crappie with; but will be back next week targeting them. Here's a pic of one of the fish; this is dad with one that he caught. All were about this same size.

Certainly can't beat that for a first day on a new lake.

Awesome! I love trolling for crappie. Fried up about 30 yesterday for the family and inlaws from this past summer.

Looks like Harrison Bay at HWY 58. Yes, it gets a lot of traffic!
