I shot her on Friday morning around 10. I was so excited I got out of the blind after 20 minutes and jumped her. I lost blood and could not find anything. Today I go up and check property and smell something on the way out. I go back to where the trail ended and follow the smell another 100-150 yards and there she was piled up in some thick brush. I feel terrible because I lost the meat and was excited about my very first deer. I shot her a little high and got one lung. I searched all over that area and overlooked her. She was all the way up top a ridge. I check my camera while I was up there and got one doe at night. I only had two deer on camera and now I lost one and don't think I have a chance on our property. With now where else to go, except an 1 1/2 hour drive, looks as if I have hit a dead end. I keep thinking if I had just been patient and learned about what to do after the shot, I would be enjoying some meat, I feel like a failure.

Hold your chin up and hang in there. You'll have another chance soon enough. It happens to us all. Just learn from the mistakes.

I'm glad you found her. Keep note of where she ran and what trails she followed and use it to learn how to track better next time you need to. And just because there's only 1 other deer on camera doesn't mean that's the only other deer. A trail cam won't get very single deer in the woods. Keep hunting there and maybe you will stick another one and recover it. Best of luck

Hold your head up bud. it happens. A sad as it is to lose one and it hurts to lose the meat you technically can say you killed a deer. Next time just hope you find it and the puzzle will be complete.

Congrats on your first kill! Don't give up on your spot. A camera only takes pic of a very small window of woods. Deer will be up on there feet soon and moving through your spot. Hang in there and keep after em buddy!!!

mistakes is the best way to learn imo. it does suck very bad but it is going to happen. if I don't drop a deer and it runs off I give it at least an hour and see how the blood looks. I don't know your property but with the rut right around the corner if I were a betting man you'll have more deer show up. you got to realize a camera only has a little bitty space its watching so you probably have more deer then you even know. get out and scout and see if you cant find some more. good luck sorry that you lost the meat but at least you did find the deer. congrats on your first kill.

It's a part of the overall picture Ben. This will help you in the future, even tho it don't seem like it at present. Just realize that it happens to us all, at one point or another, and we have to hopefully learn something from it, and continue on. Good luck and keep at it buddy. ;\)

Hey man it happens. Not just to you but to us all. It's part of it. However you just got to hold your head high and keep after it. Also I've seen like 15 deer where I hunt and I didn't get a picture of ANY deer on my trail camera in 5 weeks. That being said you may have more deer on your place than what you think. Keep after it and before you know it you'll be performing your first field dressing of a deer. Last year was my first year hunting and I didn't see a deer from the stand until the afternoon of the LAST day of deer season but I couldn't get a shot. That didn't stop me, if anything it made me even hungrier to kill one. I studied up more and did more scouting and seen all those deer on my first opportunity to go out. Just saying stay positive

I shot my first deer 2nd day of the season... Didn't find her til last week. Hated I lost my first deer, but was fortunate enough to take a shot last Thursday, and made that one count. Excited to recover my first bow killed deer!

Seems like every time I go into the woods, I learn something new. You'll be a better hunter bc of it.

Like everyone else has already said, don't let it get you down. Everyone who really hunts has lost them, and more than likely, this won't be your last. Take everything you can from the experience and move forward. Redemption will be served!

I was an excellent bow shot when I started hunting, practiced like crazy at home, from the ground, from my roof, though the bushes, you name it. Having to deal with adrenaline while shooting at a deer was a different story, embarrassed to say I lost the first 4 deer I hit, although 3 of them were good placed shots and good blood trails, they just werent good enough. I am decent at trailing, but it just didnt happen on those first four. One of these was at Yuchi, and the game warden said, "Dont fret, the coyotes have to eat too". While It sucks to have happen, it does when bow hunting, even to the best out there. (no, Im not the best or close to it)

Well said.

I have lost several as well. My third deer was lost (which was also my first buck). I have also lost two other does and another buck.

Keep at it Bro. It will happen soon!
