Fingers crossed, shot first deer ever. I was shaking, breathing heavy an d me or it farted when I pulled trigger. It was at 13 yards when i shot it with crossbow, tenpoint titan. I cant find arrow but found a tun of blood and a little bubbles. I backed back out because it was 30 yards from me and I didn't see it, it tried to run but laid down at 20 more yards.

Give it 30 minutes. Take time to replay things in your mind, and to let the adrenaline leak out of your system a little bit before rushing in. Particularly if you are in a tree stand.

It'll be there when you get there.

Thanks everyone, I was in my box blind. I am waiting on wife to get here and then go out and look. If I got her then I will post pics when get back from processor. Man I am still shaking and I can see why everyone does this. I kept running though my mind that I will probably not get one and was ok with that. However nothing can describe that feeling when the arrow lets loose. I am officially hooked.

Oh, that deer will be there! Run a video of the trailing. It will be fun to hear the commentary!

Glad you are in a ground blind for this one. Dealing with heights and adrenaline together can make for a risky situation. Staying put for 30 gives the deer time to lay down and expire in a relatively low-stress condition. And you always have a chance to see another deer stroll by!

Good call.
I was wondering if it could have been a grunt from impact.

Could it have to do with the username origins?

But then I have no idea what either of them had been eating!

Since you have blood may want to see if someone nearby has a dog. Remember it must be leashed and you cannot carry your weapon. Its rough, I lost the first one I ever shot with a bow and looked for her for 2 days. If I was closer I would come help you look. Sometimes a second set of eyes and alot of patience goes a long way.

Go back to your two last blood markings and mark them with anything you have that is bright...including TP...try to determine a direction of travel...Might also try getting low to the ground, blood can turn up on the bottom of leaves.

It is possible the deer is closer than you think...and dead.

Good luck in the recovery.

yea try this, Hope you find it.

Also look for disturbed leaves that have been russeled up. I have found a couple when blood stopped but You could see where Deer had struggled somewhat and russeled, messed up leaves a little bit.

Good luck

Follow existing deer trails from last loos - I've seen deer tend to stick to their travel routes, ad often head for water or real thick cover. Don't just look on the ground for blood, if the deer stopped bleeding there will still be some blood on the fur by the wound, and any plant or stick or sapling the deer rubs against will leave a streak of blood. Don't give up, you may have a dead deer nearby.

May be a late post but. Get to the last spot of blood. Stand there and look around. Look for the thickest cover and down hill. That's where it will be heading. I'd bet lunch on it. From what you said. A lot of blood but little bubbles. I'd bet he's single lunged. I've had tgat happen before. But almost always. They will head for the thickest cover they can find. I literally had to crawl on my hands and knees to find one one time. Don't give up. He's dead. Just gotta be persistent.

I looked and went all over and cannot find any more blood. I went up/down and through some stuff I could hardly get through but still no luck. I wished I could have found her because I only have two deer on camera, I shoot one and cant find it. I have a friend with a dog but said I would be good til 7 tonight, shot her at 10 or so this morning. I think if she is dead the meat would be spoiled. I still wish I could find her because it was my first ever deer and was looking forward to the meat.

Thanks everyone, its a lost cause. He brought the dog up and it marked its territory all over the trails. I am debating giving it a rest for a week due to this is the only location I have to hunt, other than driving to craborchard (1.5 hr drive). I don't think other than the one shot they have been pressured. They haven't located me nor have I been pointed out by other deer. I just don't know because of the blood if they will avoid the area.

It will be fine. The blood trail will not scare the deer. I have killed deer two days in row in the same spot. The gut pile or disturbance of the area sometimes doesn't matter.

Hunt and have fun...... \:\)

Sorry it didn't work out right for you this time Ben, but these things do happen when bowhunting. Don't let it get you down too much, and hit it again as soon as you can. From your texts, it sounded like you would find her within 100 yds for sure, but there's that odd instance sometimes when they zig or zag and throw us off the trail. It'll happen for you, just don't get discouraged and remember you're definitely not the lone ranger when it comes to losing a shot deer like this. ;\)

Thanks guys, I came home and wife said that she didn't want me moping around the house. She washed my cloths and hung them out, told me be up at 5:30 and try again. I had a friend drop off some rocket sidewinder 1 1/2" broad heads mechanical. He said to double band them and if it makes contact I would see blood forever. I don't know if he knows I shoot a titan crossbow and I am worried that it might not open or open in flight. Then again he could have been messing with me. My wife joined on here and is awaiting approval, Mrs Deer Repellent lol. I told her that everyone is supportive and she said that since she is hunting next year she needed to join and start educating her husband lol.

Should have put another arrow in it when it laid back down. Sounds like liver or guts. They don't move too much at a time before laying down with either.

Oh man... Hate to hear that for you... DO not give up, it has or will happen to everyone that hunts... it is not the norm...

Hang in there.... The deer will not be bothered by the blood...

I feel your pain. I lost the first one I ever shot with a bow 20+ years ago and it still makes me sick. Best thing to do is get back in there and bust another one. Good luck.

First deer I ever shot, I lost. 30-30 marlin. The next 30 or so, no problemo. Then I started bowhunting! Lol! Sometimes we get poo on our shoes. Wipe it off and keep walking.

In all fairness, I think I need to tell you that just because we were nice to you THIS time doesn't mean we won't roll you off a cliff in the future ;\)

Bring your Doe in if you must, but I hope she has a high threshold for idiocy.

lol Nimrod777,I am returning tomorrow and wish everyone who hunts tomorrow or another day better luck than me. Next week I am going to grow me some acorns and get the climber out and learn. Not having but one spot is for the birds.

So lessons I learned:

Don't go out in fifteen minutes looking for something dead-because it wasn't.

Don't try to blame a deer for your farts.

Always carry a loaded crossbow when you go in case it jumps you can try another shot at it.

And the most importantly don't text everyone excited about your deer until you are standing on top of it.

Lol, if we didn't make mistakes we wouldn't learn. (still don't change the fact I don't have any deer meat to cook.

I just about lost my first archery buck last year, a very mature one. I did not wait long enough to look. I hit him a little far back at 7 yards. Entry was high exit was low, would have been perfect if it was 5-6 inches farther forward. I am sure it was him that jumped up off the bed when I went in the thicket to look. Blood dried up leaving 300 yards of densely overgrown CRP full of deer trails and no sign of the deer. Thanks to a member here who offered to help the next morning, the deer was found dead by a creek over 450 yards from where I shot it. Your deer may be dead whether or not you find it, but go in there and kill another one and post pics when you get it. And always keep an arrow nocked. Good luck!

catman you honestly described everything about my incident. Same thing might have been high and exit low. Found white hair at last blood pile, also dense surroundings and looked 20 acres. There is a creek running right through where I am set up at. I might go out of blind around 12 tomorrow and look, don't think the meat will be good but finding it would most defiantly help my confidence and know what I did wrong.

Yes go and look after hunting tomorrow. If you get lucky and find her, the meat will be bad, but you will learn a lot about tracking and where the shot went. If you do find her, post pics. Did you ever make it down to the creek when you looked for her? if not, she may be there. follow the existing deer trails from the last blood down through the thick stuff all the way to the creek, then walk the banks and look in the creek bed. If it's anything like creeks around here, it will have very dense privet along the banks so you may have to crawl around a little to even see a deer lying under a bush. Also if she went and bedded by the creek and got back up, that would probably leave a bed with blood in it. best of luck

Well brother glad to hear you didn't give up. It is part of it. At least you had the opportunity to draw back on one and fire. Some folks may go the entire season and see only 1 or 2. Good luck out there today.

Catman we walked all over the water, but my friend says he thinks it was a gut shot? I know when I squeezed trigger it was on chest cavity middle way. Any way I couldn't get up this morning because I was up all night mad at myself for not finding it. I was really depressed about my first deer. So this morning I went to Lowes to get some locks and ran into a friend. I tell him and show the pictures of the blood. He told me with that much blood it is dead and lying where I have overlooked it. He said he has done this before and his dog will find them 90 percent of the time. I know the meat is bad but I am gong to give it one more try with his dog. If I do find her at least I will learn. The bad thing is, my father will probably kick me off the property if it is dead and wasted because of the anti hunter living in the rental above his garage. Next year I am going to find me a hunting lease with some good and minimal hunters. My friend with the dog isn't hunting because of his back. I told him if he wanted to shoot one I would come and drag it out. This way I can watch him track, gut, and process it.

also thanks everyone for your encouraging words of wisdom. I will get back at it in a little while. I should have prepared more and done more research on tracking.

You might want to carry a small spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Blood will fizz when sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. You can use it to find or confirm the next spot of blood.
