Well, I had theis deer at 55 yds last year and chose to not take the shot(see first photo). We have nicknamed the deer "Traveler" because we get pictures of him 3 miles apart on two separate pieces of ground that we hunt. I had another encounter with him later that same week as I watched him breed a doe in a beanfield at about 70 yards.

My buddy and I both agreed that we would practice at 50 yards all Summer long and should he give us the opportunity from that distance, we would try it.

Last week, my buddy climbed a tree over the same bean field where I had both encounters last year. The deer that we call "Traveler" comes strolling out. He made a turn that would put him at his closest point of approach to my buddy in his stand.

He decided that 50 yds was as close as he was coming and opted to give it a whirl. He put one in the boiler room and the buck took off. They left him overnight just to be safe but the old monarch probably died shortly after the shot. This buck was 6 1/2 and we have all pf his sheds since he was 1 1/2. He has always been an 8 pointer and he had an enormous body as he weighed 245 lbs dressed. Kinda sad to know that he is dead but hopefully a new heavyweight moves in as the rut approaches.

Last year's sheds are not included in this pic but here are his first years of antlers

Very cool.

Just a couple things that really stand out as being often overlooked by many hunters . . . . .

It's my opinion that most hunters don't realize just how much "their" bucks travel around the countryside. We may be hunting a particular spot, getting pics regularly there of a particular buck, not realizing that same buck is being regularly photographed by some other hunter 3 miles away, thinking that's "his" buck, too.

The other thing is that being an 8-pt mainframe is the norm. They may develop stickers and abnormal points, but if they are a mainframe 8 at 3 1/2, likely will be a mainframe 8 at 6 1/2. Particularly cool you found all his sheds. You must have more fields than woods?

IMO, that is tremendously more a "trophy" buck than a much higher scoring 10-pt mainframe 3 1/2 having score but comparatively no mass. Your mature 8 is MASSIVE and a heck of a trophy buck in my book.

Holy smokes that's a huge buck for tn, 245 lbs?! And a legend at that. You got him on two properties and have his sheds since yearling. Not every day you see that. Big congrats to your buddy

Just noticed the shed pics you later added. Nice.

I'm wondering if your buck may have been a year older than you think? That first shed seems a little large for a yearling, and there doesn't appear to be enough change going from yearling to 2 1/2 (just looking at the left-most 1st one, going to the 2nd one).
Those 1st two "look" more representative of going from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2, and if so, the buck would be 7 1/2.

What county was he taken?

A beast of a deer but not a Tennessee deer guys. Look back at SAR's posts and you will see he has been hunting this deer in Kansas.

Congrats. Great story, great deer.

Super stud! Im also curious if this is a TN deer? I will agree with Wes that his first set of antlers (based on sheds in pic) look to be bigger than most any TN buck would be at 1 1/2. He may very well have been 7 1/2 which would also explain him looking to have lost a little tine length, especially on his G 2's from the pic last yr? Regardless of exact age he is a STUD of a buck and a great accomplishment and privelage to have been able to hunt him for years and then kill him!!! Congrats!!!!

Wow, I've never heard of a TN buck that heavy. I wonder what the record is. Congrats on a great mature deer.

Tennessee has and does grow bucks like that. They're just not as common here as in Mid-Western States.

But after reviewing the story and this thread again, including finding each year's sheds, I'm inclined to think this buck was probably taken in a Mid-Western State. Not to say it isn't a magnificent buck and not meaning to take anything away from either that or the hunter.

That remains the bottom line of my thoughts. \:\)

Hey fellas, sorry to just now respond. I don't get the chance to get on here much. Yes, this deer was killed in the wild and yes, it was in Kansas. But I personally have seen deer bigger than this on farms that I hunt in Tennessee. I am blessed with the opportunity to get to go out there but I can promise you that I have seen deer that were quite a bit larger than this buck in Montgomery and Robertson counties. If anyone that Tennessee is not capable of producing the exact same caliber of deer as states like Kansas is crazy! They might not be as plentiful but they are there and if you hunt in the agricultural counties of middle TN that lie along the KY border, you WILL see deer this big and bigger from time to time.

We CAN produce bucks comparable to Kansas, but in relatively much smaller numbers, and in tougher-hunting environments. You typically CAN NOT find every year's sheds here like you may be able to in parts of Kansas due to the habitat differences.

Not meaning to take away from a great story and accomplishment, particularly in having found several years' sheds on that buck, it typically remains a greater hunting challenge to take a mature buck of that caliber in TN vs. any Midwestern State (such as Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, etc.)

Regardless of the State taken, this remains quite an accomplishment in my book, and I congratulate both you and your hunting buddy.

You mean you actually hunt and don't stay on TNDeer 24/7? What a stud of a buck! I agree with you that there is something just a little bit touching/sad to see an old warrior go down. However, you earned it and that makes it all the more respectable in my book. What a hoss, he just has an old weathered/white/gray look to him too! First thing I noticed was all the fat rolls on his neck. I would just love to see a buck that large in person some day. What a brute!
