That rear sight is interesting. I can't say I've seen anything like it before.

I got hooked on the 45-70 but don't like lever guns. I have a couple of single shots but that is exactly what they are...single shots. I wanted a bolt action but the 45-70 cartridge base is a feeding nightmare. I ended up re-barreling a Savage long action to 458 Win Mag. It can be safely downloaded close to hot 45-70 velocities. 300gr projectile at 2600 fps. Yes, it is a thumper but it doesn't leave anything standing. 0-200 yards, it is my go-to rifle.

Really close range in the thick stuff, a 45-70 single fits the bill.

Any further than 200 yards, the 300 Win Mag takes over.

My thumper is my TC Encore 460 S&W Mag with a 20 inch Katahdin barrel. It shoots a 200 gr Hornady FTX bullet at 2800+ fps. I love this rifle/cartridge combo. It will lay the smack down on a deer for sure.

Mine are an 1886 Winchester in 45-70 and an 1895 Winchester in 405. Big bores and lever guns go together like beer and a tiitybar.

The closest thing I have to a thumper would be my Ruger 77 Hawkeye in .358 Win. A 225 gr bullet at 2500 FPS gets the trick done. I really want an older Win 71 in 348 Win, but that is a need/want thing.

The CZ 550 you mentioned Mr. Big has had my attention for several years now. It's by far the best value in a rifle with the classic African dangerous game features that is available today. I'd love to have one in 375H&H, 416 Rigby, 458Win Mag and 458 Lott as long as I'm dreaming out loud here. \:\) $1,027 won't touch any other bolt action in those chamberings.

The only thumper rifle I have is a Weatherby Mark V in 460 Weatherby. It thumps with the best of them if you can take it. I load it with various 300 or 350 grain bullets when I use it for deer though. It can reach 3,000 fps with a 300 grain bullet but I load it down a bit to 2,800+.

Gives you confidence when walking through total darkness hearing strange unidentifiable noises too. \:\)
