Congrats! The first one is the hardest. I would think your Lab knows what you want him to do from now on also.

Good chest shot with little blood. I couldn't find it, but my untrained laborador took me right to it.
not trying to beat you up on your first deer buy why would you take a chest shot to start with?rifle maybe but bow i dont understand.but congrats on your first kill and atleast you had a dog to help you find .

Why did I take a chest shot? I dunno, I guess the gut shot was blocked by brush...

I was hunting from the ground with a X-bow...I looked left and she was standing there 20 yrds away staring at me. I didn't even blink..After 20 secs (seemed like an hour) she lowered her head and started to move. I tried to slowly ease up my bow and she looked at me and bleated. She then turned and ran 10 yrds and stopped. All I could see was her head and chest and I didn't think the head shot a good idea.

When I dressed her, my 2 blade rage had entered just behind the shoulder (a little low by bow standards) crossed her chest and exited low on the other side breaking her humerus clean just below the shoulder. Her chest was full of blood and her heart had a slice in the muscle, but not into the chamber.

I found the arrow covered with frothy bld. but never found the broadhead.

All in all, getting a spooked deer without the advantage of knowing the range (she moved to where I hadn't checked) with my heart in my throat was the highlight of my short hunting career.

I think I just figured out what you meant. You thought I took a "frontal" chest shot...lol...it was a broadside shot to the side of the chest just behind the scapula...
