As I scroll down the "Trail Cams & Pics" thread, everyone wants to know the score and age of their deer. I never understood this because if the deer is a trophy to you, what does it matter what he scores or how old he is? Bust em if you want that deer. Who cares what other people think. They all eat the same!!

this has been discussed to death here, but to summarize....there are always different types of hunters...some trophy and some meat. Some shoot the first thing and most anything where is some people (like myself) have killed enough deer since 1974 to feed an army and really don't care to kill most anything.

In closing...shoot what you want, regardless, I do.

But remember......if you bust someone for being a trophy hunter, why can't they bust you for being a meat (shoot anything legal) hunter.....

Again, pull the trigger or not, it should always be YOUR choice....

enjoy!

1) Because some hunters are hunting areas that are under a specific form of management where a buck must be a specific age and/or score before it is a harvestable buck.

2) Some hunters have set a personal age/score standard for themselves, and want to know if a buck makes that standard. Although, in my opinion, if you can't judge the age/score yourself, what are you doing setting that kind of standard?

3) Some hunters are testing their aging and scoring ability by asking more experienced field-judgers what they think. This is the only way to learn the technique.

To BSK's statements, I would add the asking is also because deer aging on the hoof may be more an art form than a science.

For those of us really into deer herd management, it is extremely valuable to know whether a particular buck is 2 1/2 or 3 1/2.

Just me personally, what makes a buck a better "trophy" has more to do with age and unique antlers rather than the score of those antlers. Ironically, uniqueness of antlers often greatly reduces antler scores. I have no desire to take a buck younger than 4 1/2, so I may ask for opinions regarding a buck's age when I'm torn between whether he's 3 1/2 or 4 1/2. And if I have a 2 1/2 with large antlers, I'd really like to do whatever I can to help him survive to 4 1/2, which may include pointing out his potential to other hunters.

I'd also add this as fuel for thought:

How many hunters wouldn't rather take a 140-plus-class older buck over a 120-class younger buck?

Our differences are mainly in degree of passion and restraint.

Some people such as myself have used the knowledge of others on here who are better educated in aging deer to learn for themselves so they/I can manage my place to my best ability. I have been blessed with a place that's manageable and my goal is to hold as many mature bucks as I can. To do so I need to be able to accurately age deer on the hoof. I've seen no better place to learn than TNdeer with so many examples and access to educated hunters... I also agree with the above statement that kill what makes YOU happy as long as its within the law...

THe reason we all want to know age and score is mostly because everyone has spent way too much time watching idiots on TV who have no idea what they are talking about!

I know for a fact that I have killed MANY 2.5 and 3.5 year old bucks that were much more challenging to get within 25 yards of my bow because they had been hunted to death by everyone on public land since birth. These deer have watched their mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters be killed, gutted and drug since they were old enough to see over the tall grass. These deer have learned to associate NEGATIVITY with human scent since they were old enough to smell.

On the other hand, I have hunted places where the sight, sound, and smell of a himan meant very little negative reaction to the same age class deer.

So when I ask what kind of hunter one is, and what they kill, I am much more interested in WHERE they are killing their deer than how old that deer is.

Because to me, a deer maturity is measured by human negative experience, NOT by inches of antler.

I other words, how good is that deer at evading hunters?

And how often is that hunter killing these "mature" deer?

Nope not at all. Some hunt for meat some hunt for horns or manage there land for older bucks it has nothing to do with maturing or progressing

Crap! I posted my "Guess the score" as a learning experience for everyone...I already knew what it scored and it was already dead, meaning I had already surmised that it was a trophy to me. Sometimes there just isn't an ulterior motive other than just having fun on a pic forum. \:D

Personally, I post the pic and ask the question to help my judging ability, but also, as a newer hunter, I'm proud to have actually captured something on camera, and then enjoy the conversations that normally come out of it. This is a campfire after all...right???

a whole lot of people want to make sure they are right about there guess of the age and score. it can be extremely tough to judge in the summer months so the more opinions you have the better idea you can have. a whole lot of people put restrictions on themselves and they try to keep them. they don't shoot the first thing that comes by them (not knocking people that do). not everyone does that. but don't knock on us trophy hunters and we wont knock yal the meat hunters.

Because size does matter \:\) to me anyway. If the opportunity to kill a high scoring buck didn't exist, then I would not deer hunt. I would duck hunt. I get my joy in killing mature large antlered bucks and having a good time hunting with friends and family. At the same time I don't shove my trophy hunting style down a meat hunters throat. Do what makes you happy.

I believe nearly all of us are both "meat" and "trophy" hunters, some a little more one way than the other.

Can't say I've ever met a "meat" hunter who would shoot a doe instead of the "buck of a lifetime" if they were both standing side by side, and most "meat" hunters will choose to kill the larger antlered buck when two bucks appear. Why? Because nearly all deer hunters are intrigued with antlers, and most eat the venison as well, even those who are mainly "meat" hunters.

I'll be a trophy hunter at places that have true trophy deer. Places that don't, let's just say I kill what I want for food.
