Which is helps increase weight loss? As in reducing the waistline?

Weight training/strength training/resistance training (NOT competitive bodybuilding)
Running/brisk walking

I'm not looking to bulk up like the Hulk, but I'd like lose this gut. I know a lot of it comes from what you eat. I'll admit I've slacked off a lot lately...eating junk food, drinking cokes, etc. And not working out as much.

I have lost weight before changing my eating habits and walking/staying active, but lately I have either gotten lazy or forgotten what worked in past. I should know this, but it's like I'm a total noob!

Since I began training for the half-marathon in July, I've lost at least 2 inches from around my belly, but only dropped 5 lbs. or less. I'm replacing fat with muscle. Granted, I'm pretty well new to it as well, but it's all a matter of just getting out and consistently doing something.

I'd suggest downloading the "Couch to 5K" app for your smartphone as a starting point. Develop a habit there before getting too over your head, too quickly.

I started in May doing a full body work out Mon, Wed and Fri. and jogging 3 miles a day on Tues, Thurs, and Sat. Ive lost 45 pounds. I usually work out low weight high reps on Mon, Wed and heavy weights on Fri.

A few years ago, I did a lot of walking instead of running. And I drank more water, no eating full meals or drinking after 6:00 (sometimes 7:00). And cut waaayy back on fast foods. That seemed to work, I lost a little weight doing that. I just need to get back to doing that!

That's my goal. Hit the gym with weights, bike, eliptical 3 days a week...doing a full body workout. Then either walk (that's power walking, not a stroll through Bass Pro), run and do light calisthenics the other days.

Now I just need to actually DO it!

Hardest part about excercising is putting on your shoes.

When I first started I would walk 2 miles, then I gradually worked my way up on the track running the straights and walking the curves, Im able to run 3 miles in 32 mins, the last few weeks Ive started mixing my cardio up with the battle ropes and running 10- 50 yard wind sprints. Ive got a 5k on Oct 20th my goal is to do it under 30 mins. Last night was the first time since May Ive ate fast food LOL a Wendy's double and fries....I almost ate the paper it was wrapped in LOL

For weight loss cardiovascular activity is going to burn more calories so is better for weight loss, the number on the scale anyway.

Strength training is important for long term results. If you go on a very low calorie diet your body will look to shed metabolically active tissues like muscle. You will lose weight, but wind up with the "skinny-fat" soft look. The strength training will help you maintain your muscle mass and a healthier body in the long term. Also, adding/maintaining your muscle will keep your metabolism burning more calories 24/7 and increase your weight loss.

Long story short, you have to do both.
