Got a 1990 Honda fourtrax 300. Rear brakes are shot.
Dust cover is rusted out
Brake drum is grooved and pitted
Brake panel is corroded and cracked.

Is it worth trying to find an entire brake assembly and rebuilding it or is it going to cost too much to be worth working on? (bike also needs a valve job)

Any suggestion on where to find an entire rear brake drum assembly? All I am finding is individual parts and \:o Whoooooie Its going to be pricy if I rebuild it piece by piece.

Found a used whole rear brake assembly for $250.

Now is where it is getting really hard to make a decision.

$250 + shipping. Probably will need new brake shoes + ~~ $40 shipped. Incidentals....$15-30 Call it $350
Ill do the labor.

Then it needs a top end job. New valves and valve seats reground. Might as well throw some rings in while the motor is apart. Shop quoted me $450 for the valve job, figure an extra $100 parts n labor for rings. So $550.

Looking at about $900 to get a 1990 fourtrax working again.
Should I part it out, or is it worth fixing?

Tough decision. I picked up a 1995 Fourtrax Foreman 400 for $2K. Great condition like it had never been ridden even remotely hard. I would have to figure that between the cost to repair and $2500 you can update, upgrade and up size. keep your eye on Craigslist, classifieds here and ATV trader.

Probably be hesitant on dropping that kind of cash on it. I would either spend minimal amount of money on it to fix and sell + the repair cash and find another in good shape or fix the brakes and drive it till it stops.

If you decide to keep it I would find a parts bike, look far and wide wouldn't be surprised if you found one for $300-$500.

Good Luck
