One of my buddies keeps swearing that the best way to clean a ML is with soap/water... does anyone else do this? Of course after I would coat it in a bit of oil but he is saying that is the best way to clean... any worries about rust/siezing?

I use hot water and a little dishwashing liquid. I oil the barrel inside and out after I'm done and stand it muzzle down so that oil doesn't wind up in the patent breech or nipple. Before I shoot the next time, I'll run a dry patch down it and pop a cap and then it's ready to go.

Done it hundreds of times.
We did it in the bathtub, before the days of the fancy inline rifles. \:D

Black powder and the substitutes all leave water soluble residue so I suppose water for any of them will do. As a matter of fact triple 777 recommends just that for cleaning. The exception is BH209....petroleum based solvent is what Western says. By the way and even though I don't use the stuff, their web site has a wealth of info on this powder.

I've been using a home made cleaner for years that consist of equal parts Murphy Oil Soap, over the shelf hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol. This stuff really cleans the heck out of real black powder. The only thing you might want to do with cleaner is to protect your stock finish if it was prone for damage due to the alcohol.

Hotter the water the better. I even clean mine at the gun range with water(not hot), then a dry patch till dry, the a very lite coting of bore butter, I have never had rust.

I use FP-10 for everything. When I am shooting on the range I use windex or a glass cleaning solution since I always shoot on a clean dry barrel.

I've always used hot soapy water in all of my M/L. Started using it when all we had was black powder. The hotter the water the better, you want the barrel to be so hot that any water remaining will evaporate. After the barrel dries I will run a wet patch with glass cleaner [windex] then a dry patch followed by an oiled patch. I have one M/L that is over 20 years old and the barrel still looks like new.

Switched to blackhorn and now just use solvent and some oil when finished. I always fire a couple primers before loading.
