Too hot out there today, and the ground just too dry to dig. As much rain as we've had, you'd think the ground would still be moist. But since it ain't rained a day here since September rolled in, the ground is extremely dry.

Got out for about an hour today at a site in Athens. Not much to show, but enough to say "they were here".

They are actually just pieces of what we call "camp lead". The whole cartridge to a minie ball was encased in paper...so when the boys would go into camp, they would begin starting fires to cook their food on, or boil coffee. The most readily available tender for starting a fire, was those pieces of paper. So often times, they would steal the paper off a cartridge, and render the bullet itself useless. They would either toss it to the side, or into the fire. People often think these are lead spills from them casting their own bullets...but that's not the case. Their cartridges were supplied via the US Govt and came by the wagon load of huge wooden crates full of ammo.

On a side note...here is a chewed one I dug a couple months ago. Chewed by what....probably not human, but more than likely a rodent or hog.

From what I learned not long ago, they weren't chewed, but solders would do that to the bullets to cause more damage to the enemy.

It's always amazing to me how much of that stuff was left behind.
