City water or river water? Doesn't make any difference. When it is this hot and dry just get water on the trees. Nurseries use both. While this is not the case here when useing city water to overhead water, wetting leaves and all, the clorine in city water will help hold back some of the fungal diesease.
Time of day? Evening is best. Evaporation rates are much lower at night than during the day.
Tip: Take a five gallon bucket and drill a very small hole in the side of the bucket but as close to the bottom as possible. The hole should be 1/8" or smaller. Set the bucket next to the tree and fill'er up. You want the water to come out slowly in order for it to soak in the ground. As hard as the ground is now if you pour the water most of it will run off. You can also dig a trench around the tree and repeatedly fill the trench as the water soaks in. But the bucket method is much faster.
Myth: Don't fertilize the first year. I call BS on that. You can fertilize the first year but the key here is do in in moderation. I fertilize bare root trees that are planted with in the first few weeks after transplanting.

Man this is really a great bunch of information and tips. Thank you all very much. I will let you know how they are doing in a week or so. I do know one thing for sure is that a couple of days ago they was just about dead. Now they seem to be doing alright and I hope they look even better this morning after sunrise.
Thanks again for all the help.
Lets pray for some rain.
