Just wonder if I should water my fruit trees and wild persimmon trees Ive planted. They are very stressed out and need some water. The biggest problem lies in the fact that they have been recently transplanted (past fall) and have not established a good root system (water reserve).
Anyway Ive heard before that sometimes its not a good idea to water plants etc when there is no rain forecasts for so long and the temperatures are so high...true ? Of course I would be watering of an evening though.
I think we are suppose to be careful about using our water around because of the heat drought here but I also have close access to carrying river water to the desired plants. Which would you use ?
Sorry about all the talking but in short...
Water when so hot ? (even in the evening)
and city water or river water ?
Thanks

I would water them. If you don't, they may die due to being newly transplanted trees.

But perhaps TreeMan will comment...

Thanks guys for the help. I have a confession to make. I was hoping I didnt mess up by doing this but I watered them very thoroughly yesterday evening anyway but thought I should ask because of the chance that I might need to stop. I will send treeman a message and maybe he can help with the river water question. It will certainly be a lot more work involved with retriveing the river water but might be worth it. Thanks agian for the help.

Well I didnt hear back from treeman so took it into my own hands again.
Me, the wife and our two boys went swimming this evening. After we got done I put them to work filling and carrying 2 and 5 gal buckets of river water. I then drove the pickup as close as possible. I hand watered every Persimmon tree, Autumn Olive, and Kiowa Blackberries<(doing alright anyway). I thought I would fertilize so I mixed one scoop of Miracle grow for every two gals. It actually calls for one scoop per gal but I didnt want too much with the hot weather. I forgot to mention that the difference between the trees of watering and the day before is the difference between DAY and NIGHT. I couldnt believe that we almost lost track of how our plants was doing out there. It took me a lot of time to water everything but I certainly believe it will be worth the extra effort. Im also glad that I didnt make a bad decision the first time and hope I didnt make one this time with the river watrer and Miracle Grow.
Thanks again for the help.

I'm not an expert but I don't think you outta fertilize those trees at all for the first year. I've heard of too many people trying to help their newly planted trees only to hurt them with the fertilizer.

They are stressed right now like you said and plain water should help more then anything.

I just talked to the wife and was reading this post to her as she was involved with everything the last two days. She said I should apologize for not telling the truth in my original post. I am sorry for misleading anyone with this. Yes I should have been honest and straight forward from the get go. I got nervous after watering them and started second guessing myself and it was my way of trying to find out if I screwed up without anyone knowing. She is right and this is not my normal habit of this and Im sorry. I meant no harm and thanks again.

No problem. That probably happens a lot on this site.

I planted around 25 trees at my mom's 2 years ago. They were Tulip Poplars, Sweet Gum, Sarvisberry, and Sycamore. They all lived except for one of the Poplars. We watered them 3 times a week the first year and then fertilized them just a little this year.

Some extra water should help out- in case you think the miracle grow might have hurt. It probably didn't though since you mixed it lean. I'd use the river water instead of tap water myself.

Good Luck on your trees.

Hey PBR no problem you can P.M. me anytime with gardening questions. I've had a little experence and training with gardening. In this time of drought I would water every few days. The river water is better than city water. Has no chorine. Not to say city water will kill em . I don't think the little miricle grow you used did any harm.I will tell you something called Super Thrive 1 drop per gallon will help em alot. Do not over do it !! Something else that will help is a anti-transpirent.I think the most common one is called wilt pruf. You spray it on the leaves .It keeps the tree from losing water thru the leaves.Check at the co-op or a garden center. Shouldn't be hard to find. I might be able to find a recipe for a homemade one. I will post it here if I can find it.
