Just watched a little of a Netflix Documentary called "America the Beautiful 2". The just of it is about BMI. Pretty cool documentary and gets you thinking.

I decided to check my BMI. I am 5'10" and weigh 180lbs at night before bed, my BMI is 25.8, which means I am overweight! Are you kidding me? Yes, I could loose a few pounds of fat, but I would hopefully gain it back in muscle, which would still mean Im "overweight". For me to be a normal weight according to our lovely goberment and a few moronic scientist I would need to weigh 173 pounds. No wonder our kids are mentally screwed...

My last physical the doc said my blood work and everything else was great. I will be 32 next month, I work out 4-5 days a week. Eat healthy but admit I love sweets and good beer/bourbon. I do not smoke and my waist is 34 at the widest part of my gut and 35 just above my hips. But if I smoked crack and weighed 130 lbs I would be in a normal weight range...

So for those who are trying to get healthy, I wouldnt put much thought or worry into your BMI...you will not get much motivation from it.

BMI is a height to weight ratio. It doesn't take any factors such as muscle mass or frame size into account. I'm 6'4" and weigh 310. BMI chart says I should die later today, but it doesn't account for muscle.

This should help explain it:

Same height, same weight, same BMI, totally different body type

Haha! Perfect scenario.

I just hate the BMI push because we tell kids they have a high BMI and therefore they assume they are unhealthy.

While BMI calculators are notoriously inaccurate, please don't use it as an excuse to think your over-weight status is acceptable from a health standpoint. I've fallen into that trap myself.

Us guys are really bad about this - when I was pushing 240# (6'2" tall), I was LYING to myself when I said "If I drop below 215# I will be sickly looking", and "I'm a big guy, I would be a toothpick at 195#".

The fact is - when I hit 215, I was still carrying a LOT of fat.

And when I hit 195, I was still carrying *some* fat, but I was pretty dang well built (NOT a toothpick), and could have lost some more of that fat and looked GREAT.

BMI calculators right now put me north of 23%, reality is I'm closer to 19% based on my experience and knowing my own body.

I think generally speaking the BMI is an OK index, but truly more to the story. For example, a really "skinny" person who has a great BMI may not be in good health at all, etc.

BMI charts have nothing to do with body fat percentage. It is a height to weight ratio.

Here is a one for those that haven't seen one.

One thing to keep in mind though is that BMI takes into account what is healthy for your joints / heart / etc. based on the size of your frame.

Look at Ray Rice .. dude is 5' 8" and 212 (BMI = 32.5).

His body fat % is probably somewhere around 6% - which makes him lean, but does it make him healthy?

If your frame is designed to carry 155, the extra 57lbs of mass has serious health implications no matter how lean you are. His joints, his heart .. they will all suffer in the long run.

As soon as he is out of the league, I can image you see him drop 50lbs pretty quick. Just look at Barry Bonds "now" vs. "then" .. these guys slim down quick once they're off the juice!

Long story short, BMI is not total BS. Think of heart and joints as opposed to only pant size!
