I recently ordered a new Mathews Chill 27 inch draw length and 70 lb DW bow. I can not decide on what arrow to buy. I want a good solid arrow for hunting. I know with my draw length the speed is not going to be real fast anyway but I want a arrow that has the best of both worlds (speed and penetration). So for you bow experts out there can you help me. I have been looking at the Axis 400's. Any advice would help Thanks in advance

Take a look at the Gold Tip Velocity series of arrows. Very tough arrows. I have shot them for the last couple years.

The Axis is a great arrow, but your spine choice is way off. I ran your numbers and with that bow you are almost a .300 spine—.3171 to be exact with my guesstimate of what your numbers should be. I would go with a .300 spine arrow with the bare arrow measuring at 27inches and total arrow length from tip of head to throat of the nock measuring at 28inches or so. Another one to look at it is the new Easton Carbon Aftermath—a very affordable and appears to be very durable as well—I switched to them and have been happy so far. Either arrow, the aftermath or axis, will have your speed at the bow of 260ish/62ft/lbs 30yds your speed is 250ish/58ft/lbs k/e.

The arrow selection/spine charts are very generic and sometimes are way off—not all bows generate the same amount of energy.

For example a bow of the late 90's/early 2000's @ 70lbs of draw will not generate the same amount of energy that a bow of today such as yours will....and that is where the discrepancy is—the arrow makers try to catch everyone, but because of the wide disparity of power capabilities it can be difficult. Imagine a tire maker trying to make one specific tire that fits and works equally well on a 1980 Corvette and a 2014 Corvette...that's the problem arrow makers have and the reason charts are not always reliable.

I shot the Gold Tip Velocity for awhile and switched to Gold Tip Kinetics. Just a personal preference, I like a little heavier arrow. My finished weight is 415gr.
