I'm very very interested in learning how to fly fish. Just trying to figure out if I have the time or the $$ for a new hobby. First question would be, are there any good places to fish in Hendersonville area? Manskers Creek, Station Camp creek? What else do I need to know?

The first thing you need to do is join the Hendersonville Fly Fishing Club. Go to a meeting, and the members will happily lead you in the right direction. This is a really fun group. I copied the below from their Facebook Page.

We offer monthly meetings with educational programs that are centered around local and regional fly fishing destinations as well as fishing and casting techniques. We also offer a club library with numerous books and videos on the great sport of fly fishing. We hold outings on local and regional waters for fellowship and fishing. The club also produces an informational monthly newsletter with fishing reports, tips and techniques and other invaluable information.

Meetings will be held on the third Thursday of the month at Ruby's Kitchen on New Shackle Island Road in Hendersonville. The meetings start at 7:00 p.m., and social hour starts at 6:00 p.m.

Joining the Hendersonville Fly Fishing Club is simple. You can either come to a meeting and sign up or mail your membership dues to the club. Please email Jon Jordan at streamerfishing@yahoo.com for more information. Membership dues are $12.00 per year.

My boy catches bream on the banks of Old Hickory with his. Usually on some type of small cork popper. Otherwise, we go to the Caney for trout.
We're not pros by any stretch, just self taught and I just figured it out along the way many years ago.

If you need a rod to practice with before you drop the dough on one just let me know, I've got an older one you can borrow.
Nothing fancy but it works and we're in H'ville.

My advice is to not give up on it till you figure it out. I made myself leave the spinning rods at home to make myself use the fly rod to get better at it. Now I would prefer to use it over anything else. Joining the fly fishing club is a good idea too I joined the local trout unlimited and got a free casting lesson and gotto meet several local guides that helped me out as well.

I second that. I used to fish the Hiwassee with a spinning rod and rooster tails and think life was great. Once I got a fly rod and left the spinner at the house - I can't imagine using a spinning rod again.

I agree with what everyone said. Although I love all types of fishing, I'd say I fly fish 95% of the time.

BTW, you don't have to be a member of the Hendersonville FF Club to go to meetings.

My dad and both my brothers fly fish. They rarely use a spinning rod. I'm the opposite...I rarely fly fish, and prefer a spinning rod. \:D
