I just got a shoulder mount back from taxi. I asked him to pull the jaw. Please help me age the buck. Thanks.

I would need to have the jaw in my hands to get a solid idea on age, but from the pictures I agree with 8 POINTS; at least 4 1/2 and maybe 5 1/2.

First molar is dished out, all teeth are worn real low (side view) I am thinking 6.5

4th tooth (1st permanent molar) is dished, but look at the 6th tooth. Not only does it still have sharp crests, the dentine is not wider than the enamel.

is it just me or is the dentine 2 shades of brown, darker in the center. Looks to me like dentine is a lot wider than enamel

I think I have a photo with the flash on that may provide a better perspective. Are you guys looking at the top view or side view?

Try a quartering view showing both.

I'd go 5.5... enough wear on the last molar to justify that, but not quite enough cupping on the first molar to say 6.5

Are you looking at the dentine/enamel of the lingual (tongue-side) crests? The enamel/dentine comparison is ALWAYS of the lingual crests.

Here is a different view with flash. Unfortunately I was using an iPhone. I would get much better quality with my Nikon DSLR but I was too lazy to get it out.

yes, lingual crests, maybe it's just me but I see 2 shades of brown dentine much wider than the enamel layer around it

Only use the true dark brown dentine. The enamel will have a section that is darker than the whitest section, but that is not the actual dentine. Dentine of 6th tooth (3rd true molar) is definitely narrower than the enamel on either side.

Ok I did not know that. Always thought the enamel was only the outermost white section. When I look at a jaw I can see a distinct separation between the white and the brown... In a bit confused now.
