I leave a cam out here at the house year round and don't get many big buck pics on it. Yes it makes them jump alittle . the does get used to it and some bucks do . The bucks who have grown up having there pic taken are not as jumpy around the cams.
I have a few small farms I hunt that I only set cams out for July -Sept. I check the cams and move them every two weeks during these two months. I usually don't move the cams far.
My thinking here is that like you said a buck gets his pic taken and you never see him again .This don't mean youre buck has left the country. He has however, learned how to walk around the cam.
I have had a pic of bucks and then nothing for a few weeks . Then I spun cam around to oppisite side of the tree and bam!! I got a few more pics of the bucks ,So my advise is move the cams to new locations each time you check them if you are looking for big bucks. Be scent weary because that could be one of youre problems. good luck.

Rackaholic,

Every deer is an individual. Some freak out, some don't care at all. But as Wes had mentioned previously, the older the deer is, the more likely they won't like the flash of a camera.

That buck looks "middle-aged," which would be 2 1/2 or 3 1/2.

If a deer learns about the camera? hummmm. Just makes you think that an old deer can learn what a stand is. Also is it the camera or just the presence of a new object in the area. Deer especially older deer are extremely wary of their surroundings and if something new is there it seems that some of them will never adjust to it. I hunted a huge extremely old deer for many years and learned that he would never become acustom to new unnatural things. I'd have him figured out early on and have a stand place up well before the season. For some reason he would know exactly where I was. There where several times where I would watch him come up the trail that I was set up on and then suddenly go way around me and then resume travel on the same trail. The only time I ever got close to harvesting him was by carrying in my climber and hunting from a tree I had never had contact with before. So it makes me wonder is it the actual flash or IR that bothers the deer or more the presences of something that hasn't been there before.

156p&y,

Not only do they learn about the cameras, they learn a little bit about how they work. I've watched deer repeatedly as they've fed in a food plot that has had a camera pointed into it for a week or two. The deer will literally feed along towards the camera, but just before walking in front of it they would leave the field, walk around behind the camera (within touching distance of it), and then re-enter the food plot and continue feeding. They had not only learned its location, they had learned its range of motion sensing (where they had to be to get flashed). That's why I say to move your cameras frequently. Even moving them just 30 yard one way or another will allow you to start photographing the flash-shy deer again.

I've seen firsthand how a flash can spook a deer, as last year while I sat in a stand above a camera that I had left out and watched a doe walk up and get photographed. The camera was set to 3 photos and the first flash stopped her in her tracks, the second made her jump back about a foot, and on the third one she just turned and went back the same way she came. No other deer came down that trail that morning, as all crossed through a thicket about 40 yards away. Needless to say, when I climbed down I took the camera home and now don't use them after bow season starts.

I've been thinking about putting the cameras up high (8' to 10') on a branch that is angled to get it above the deer's line of sight. That way, the flash would come from above, similar to lightning, which they see all the time. Would be a little more troublesome to place and retrieve cameras and cards, but might be worth it if they don't have to be moved so often. Has anyone tried this technique?

Marlin308,

I've not heard from anyone whether those high-pointed-down camera set-ups help with less camera aversion or not. But if you try it, let us know how it works.

The problems you mentioned is why I've learned to follow two rules:

1) Don't put cameras near treestands.

2) Move the camera every time you check them. You don't have to move them far.

Good rules BSK. My problem is, I have a couple of older, cheap cameras that only work over salt licks, and that's also where I happen to have stands hung for bow season. I just got a homebrew from Outdoor Bob and it should work on trails, so I'll keep it away from my stand locations.

I'm going tomorrow to move my camera off a lick and over a natural spring, which should be getting a lot of action with this weather. I plan on putting it up high and pointing it down towards the water, so in a couple of weeks I'll post and let everyone know how well it works. One thing that comes to mind is that it will be had to tell the antler size of the bucks from that angle, but we'll see.

Flash, both IR and white, definitely scares some deer.
