Attached to the melon. Some people wait for the tail to totally detatch itself before harvesting.

Yep the little pig tail thing is what we always watch for. Thumping it doesn't really work as good IMO. They all have a hollow sound when you thump 'em anyway. When we first started growing them, we pulled quite a few too early because they sounded good thumping them. Your best bet for growing a big one is to prune the vine itself if it has any other smaller melons on it. Go ahead and cut those off so that all the nutrients, etc are going to your biggest melon. We've grown Black Diamonds up to nearly 50# and those Carolina Cross melons that were nearly 200 lbs. But those are mostly for show. Black Diamonds are my favorite for eating.

Years ago I ran across Blacktail Mountain watermelons in an article the Mother Earth News ran, saying that it had won the favor of melon tasters. Bought some seeds, and just didn't seem to have the soil for it. Last year I bought some generic seeds, but the melons never survived full-term; always dried up or got some fungus.

If I can figure out how to grow them successfully and on purpose, I'll be all over that. If this one in my garden makes it and tastes good at all, I'm saving every seed!

If you want to grow the best tasting watermelon, try Tiger Babes. They are small. Just the right size for you and Trophy Doe.
