Got a volunteer watermelon in my little patch of garden, and it looks incredibly perfect. Beats any one I've tried growing on purpose! The first one on the plant was doing great, but hanging from a bit of fence; when I tried to rig a support for it, it broke off the vine. I've got two others, on the ground, and they are getting big.

When do I harvest?? I do LOVE me some watermelon, and don't want to botch this!

I think when the white spot on the bottom where the melon touches ground turns yellow, it might be ripe. It's hard to tell though. If the fruit quits growing for a while it might be ready. See what color the bottom of the fruit is and if it turns yellow it might be ripe.

Sounds reasonable.

I know that first fruit seemed to almost double daily for a while. It was encouraging to watch. These other two were hiding in the edge where some tall grass is. The bigger is about basketball size now, and solid dark green. Crossing my fingers!

Do not pull it until the little pig tail next to the melon turns brown.

By little pig tail, you mean the stem itself, or something adjacent on the vine?

This has always worked for me Break off a straw what kind doesn't matter. Place it on the melon, if it turns the melon is rip if it doesn't then wait. Also if it turns when checking in the morning, cut a small plug out and pore in a pint of vodka and let sat till afternoon the pull melon and chill it. Then you eat it. Just joking about the vodka. The straw part does work.
