I use to hunt scott county a lot & would hear them all day long.set down by a log 1 day &a hen flew in & plopped down not 5' from me,started feeding in some little red berries,3 minutes after she got there a male flew in.After about 5 min they flew off about 1 minute apart.I have to this day not figured out how they found each other.heard a few last year but haven't been in the right place yet

Yep and very few in the mountains, too. My 17 year old says we're hunting ghosts half the time, but, it's addictive. About 5 more weeks and it's my time of the year.

I really like the ghost analogy. It really feels that way when you hunt areas that used to always produce birds and there is none to be found. Its the dogs I walk behind and memories of the golden years that keep me going back in the thick stuff.

In my heart I still am. GSP died in Feb.. Looking at maybe a Wirehaired Griffon to train up.

Saturday Oct.12 is upon us. I don't care how warm or rainy it may be. I'll have the hay in the barn by then, the girls are looking sharp and plenty of vacation until the end of the year. I've kicked around the idea of heading North again, but, I think I'll stay on these hills instead. Bring it on!

I have made it out twice. The first, warmer day, 2 flushed wild. The second, cooler day, Bella gave me a good solid point. I had maybe .02 of a second before he blasted in the laurel. Never pulled a trigger and never got him back up. We did see this one on the drive out. Hope to have a better report after the weekend.

I haven't ever seen one here. But if its anything like quail I would love to hunt. There pretty birds. What part of the state are they mostly in?

They are found in the Eastern part of the state. They are some
what like a quail, but they are bout the size of a small chicken and they are IMO the Greatest of quarry to pursue lol!

Saw a few birds early, in November, even scratched one down. Since then it's been very slow. Most time I've had boots on the ground in a couple years.Least amount of grouse I've saw in probably 5 years.

Have only made it out a few times. Have moved a few birds and put the first one on the ground today. Its never easy...but has felt a bit slower this year. My old dog is getting tired of climbing these ridges. She pointed one today. It flushed ahead of her before I got there. She let the young dog have at it on teh follow up.

Times are hard. I live in town and had a grouse in my yard Saturday. It was a long ways from the big woods.
