I've been into lifting most of my life. First for sports in middle and high school (football, wrestling, track), then football in college. I have a BS in exercise science and a MS in human performance. I am certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. I run a fitness center and teach PE classes (lecture and activity) at a Tennessee JuCo. I also compete in strongman. I love training and pushing myself to get better. I don't give a flip what I look like, I care about what I can do.

What kind of martial arts? I took Kuk Sool Won as a kid. We got a new master and he was chasing a girl in class and not teaching us anything. Ended up leaving and not going back. Wish I had switched to Taekwondo when that happened.

I'm pretty much a noob at fitness/nutrition. I've been in the gym off and on for about 2 yrs. I don't have any desire to run marathons, do competitive weightlifting, etc. I just want to lose a little weight and improve muscle and tone.

I'm 24 and a certified personal trainer. The certification test was so easy it's ridiculous, so I would definitely ask what credentials the trainer has when looking for one. If he has the same one I got he probably doesn't know much. I only do because I've got a background in lifting and I'm currently getting my master's degree in Exercise and Sport Science and will get my CSCS from the NSCA here soon.

Back in the day (1980????) our football/gym coach would have us stretching & working out but didnt explain what exercise worked what muscle groups, or the benifits of all the different types of exercise we done, all we knew was warm up, stretch, workout, run.

Funny thing is now this is considered wrong. You shouldn't static stretch before an intense workout. Static stretching (reach down touch your toes)relaxes the muscles and nervous system and can inhibit performance up to 10%. Static stretching should be done after the workout.

I've been a fitness coordinator of a large fitness facility for about 6 years, practice Crossfit, run 8-10 races a year, some Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and powerlifting. I know a little, but still have a lot to learn. I have to try out one of those tri marathons, haha sounds terrible
