If a snake bites you

Remain calm.
Immobilize the bitten arm or leg, and stay as quiet as possible to keep the poison from spreading through your body.
Remove jewelry before you start to swell.
Position yourself, if possible, so that the bite is at or below the level of your heart.
Cleanse the wound, but don't flush it with water, and cover it with a clean, dry dressing.
Apply a splint to reduce movement of the affected area, but keep it loose enough so as not to restrict blood flow.
Don't use a tourniquet or apply ice.
Don't cut the wound or attempt to remove the venom.
Don't drink caffeine or alcohol.
Don't try to capture the snake, but try to remember its color and shape so you can describe it, which will help in your treatment.
Call 911 or seek immediate medical attention, especially if the area changes color, begins to swell or is painful

I have a fear of snakes and to me one and two on that list are just stupid... remain calm? A snake just bit me! How do I accomplish that? Immobilize the arm/leg? Goes along with number one, a snake just bit I am running away! But that's just me.

What are some real backwoods tips for getting bit by a snake? What would the proper steps to take? Do you carry a snake bite kit in early season?

never heard of anyone getting bit while hunting. just be careful and watch your step. that's honestly a good steps to take. the reason why they say stay calm is because when you get round up your adrenalin start running and could put you in worse shape then you were in. you don't want you blood flowing as much with poison in your system. it will make it worse. if your that scared of being bit. get a good pair of snake boots or snake chaps if you do get bit it will most likely be on the legs or feet. if your careful then you should be ok. imo your more likely to be bittin in turkey season then deer season. but honestly the odds are very low.

Bites do happen, but 99% of people bitten are messing with the snake when bitten. I like snakes, but I don't mess with hot snakes.

Lift and feel around under every rock and log you come across with your eyes closed. No kit is necessary. ;\)

Really? Instead of taking sound scientifically tested advice, you want antiquated "backwoods" advice?

The best advice, if you want to live, is:

*********************************
If a snake bites you:

Call 911 or seek immediate medical attention, especially if the area changes color, begins to swell or is painful.
******************************************

Now if you DON'T want to live, then by all means, take the "backwoods" advice.
