After having to miss the opener due to a work obligation, I was chomping at the bit to get the opportunity to get after a limit of squirrels. Went to my parents farm this morn, a place where my love of the sport first blossomed. This is the same block of woods i took my first limit from over 2 decades ago. Always a treat to stalk the same hardwoods i did as a kid. Action started fast, had 4 on the ground while sitting against the same gnarly oak. I got a little sloppy on 5-7 and did not mark my trees well enough before the shots- took a bit of leg time to reveal their whereabouts. Both understory and canopy foliage are unusually thick this yr coupled with a bit of rust from the summer off made what should have been a 645 limit turn into an 8 oclock affair. Decided that since my dad is fond of them and i shouldnt need one, i passed on all fox squirrels. Almost regretted that decision later but it all worked out in the end. Ended up with a even split in males in females, with several juveniles. all grays. 8 travelers and 2 cutters. The action in hickories dominated the morn, but i did see quite a few in pignuts and a took one cutting in an ol chestnut oak.

Yeah the Ruger is dialed in-problem is I ain't always dialed in! Lol However, I am perfect for the season having taken only 1 shot-my kills/shot can only go downhill from here but it was a good way to open the season. Cutter, chestnut oak, 25 yds.

I don't know how you do it. I was in an area on Sunday morning that was literally raining hickory nuts everywhere from mature hickory trees. We had a shotgun and a .22 and couldn't see them/find them, couldn't reach them with the shotgun (12 gauge) as they were so high up, and/or couldn't get a clean shot with the .22. Covered up with squirrels and only got 4.

these guys were certainly high. ridiculously accurate and good optics with thin crosshairs help. also the "right woods". i am headed to ky today so i couldnt go this morn, but have a very challenging spot picked out for tomorrow. loaded with squirrels but tremendously thick. i will have to mark my trees well before the shot.
