Ok so you just hunt the lay of the land or you just go get in any tree.

If I have never hunted a place, I will make a quick trip. Mainly look for what are obvious to me places to hunt. Especially mast trees and edges. Then I will hunt various stands and adjust to the deer. Most of my places I have hunted for a long time. On public land I pick a place on maps, google earth, satellite pics, etc. and get as far away as I can from roads and WALK and look for the same things. Have had great success doing this. 99 percent of my scouting is on my walk in to hunt a stand and or my way back out.

Thanks that helps a bunch.

Tom

I agree with this. Places I grew up hunting I try to stay out of, new places I study maps and google earth. Then my "scouting" tends to be a side effect of hunting. This applies to Southeastern hunting, Western Hunting is a little different in that I will "scout" a area before I hunt it or scout while I am hunting.

Early season scouting in TN produces high hopes and crushed dreams, especially for the majority of us that hunt small peices of property. I remember seeing my first bachelor group of mature bucks on one 70 acre farm, I would watch them once a week from Aug to early Sept, never got close or went into the area they were coming out. Spotted a tree on a logging road the used to come into the field, come opening day of archery I never seen them. It wasnt till next summer that I seen them again, thats when I discovered range shifting and splitting up of bachelor groups.

Google earth is the best scouting tool for the common man, free and easy to use.

Plus every public land deer me or my buddies have killed that we consider a good deer has been on the first day or two of hunting the spot and never stepping foot in it, expect for map scouting no boots n the ground.
