The loggers damaged a few of my white oak trees while dragging logs out of the woods. The damage is located mainly near the ground with bark rubbed off an area from 5 - 12" (along one side).

Will these trees die? If not, should I expect poor acorn crops over the next few years while they heal?

They are generally the first trees to fall to a disease. In addition, their timber value is reduced.

But most "skinned" trees survive.

SC beat me to it. Something like that definitely might help ward off disease or insects a bit.

I've seen timbering contracts that clearly state that if a tree is damaged by dragging operations, the logger pays full log value for the tree.

In my experience, young healthy oaks will heal up from a catface, and soft woods like poplar will rott out and eventually die or blow down, although it may take 20 years.

I should have included the damaged tree clause in our contract

I'll give this a try. Is one method better than the other? (Tar vs spray paint)

Does it matter what type paint I use?

tar or paint.....neither of them are going to do anything to help the tree. If the tree will heal, it will heal on it's own. If it doesn't it will die.
