I told my wife when I bought her one a few years ago to keep her fingers out of the way. I stressed it to her every day. Then I went and sighted it in for her, on the 6th shot, I had this immediate pain shoot through my left hand. It hurt, bad! Ended up losing my thumbnail and it took a while to grow back, but she has never let me live it down.

Pretty sure I will be losing my thumbnail and my thumb still throbs but it just caught the tip. However, googling crossbow thumb injuries produces some horror stories. Many, many people lose their fingers and thumbs each year. This is a huge problem with a crossbow. It happens so frequently trial lawyers are considering a class action suit to cash in.

I did it the first time in the 1990's which I still vividly remember so I was super conscious of it happening. Twenty years later I get a new crossbow with a plastic protective guard and do it again on the 5th shot.

I like the velcro idea and I'm looking at mounting some type of Magpul forearm grip before I let my kids pick it up.

I'm not knocking any crossbow shooters but for me the day I can't pull my bow back will be the day I stop bow hunting.

Yep had the top of my thumb sewed back on,still no feeling ,and that has been 10 years ago.I felt a thump and looked down at my thumb and I just told the boy to go get his mom to take me to the ER. The worst part is watching him sew it on ,he run the thread thru the thumb nail. OUCH!

The day you have a shoulder injury will be the day you get to make that decision.

well one way it protects it is it wouldn't come in contact with the broad head that way you won't get cut by it.

but you have to watch the way you put your hand on the cross bow or the string will pop your hand and make it throb like crazy.

Gotcha, I wasn't thinking about broadhead contact, just the string. My Dad lost the end of his thumb a few years ago while discharging his crossbow and not paying attention. It took the top off and chipped the bone. There was fear that he would end up with a partial amputation but the Doctor was able to save it. Scary stuff.

I notice some of the new ones are designed to make it very hard to get ur thumb up there. I have a buddy who did it.

I watched the doctor sew the tip of my middle finger back on when I was about 14... shut it in a truck door and the only thing holding it on was a flap of skin about 1/8" wide.... you could see the bone sticking out the end of the severed area.... Nail doesn't look normal and very little to no feeling in the end of that finger.

That's fine with me. It is also what I said. Then I realized how absolutely stupid it was and got a crossbow. Talk about cut your nose off to spite your face. I mean, think about it. What kind of sense does that make?
